James Potter is an idiot. And the sad part is, he doesn't try not to be. He thinks he is so cool, playing with that golden snitch, which doesn't even make sense: he's a Chaser! I don't know if it would be possible for him to draw more attention to himself than he already does. Yet, still thinks I might go out with him. Ugh, he's a git. I approached the portrait of the Fat Lady and told her the password to enter Gryffindor Tower. I saw two fellow sixth year girls, Marlene McKinnon and Mary MacDonald sitting in two squashy armchairs by the fire.
"Hi, Lily!" Marlene greeted me brightly, and Mary looked up, too and smiled.
"Hi," I responded, with a hint of venom in my voice that I hadn't meant.
"What's wrong?" Mary asked me, noticing my tone.
"Oh, just Potter," I said, with as much malice in my voice as I could muster when I said his name. Marlene unsuccessfully hid a snigger. "What?" I exclaimed at her. "He just asked me out for the eleventh time since Christmas! And that was two weeks ago!" Her giggle turned into full laughter. I just shook my head. "He's an arrogant toe-rag!" I said, with finality in my voice. Marlene just laughed harder, and Mary looked as though she was finding it hard to not smile. What great friends. I decided I wouldn't get any sympathy out of the two of them and changed the subject. "Anyway, you working on Slughorn's essay?"
Marlene choked herself back together. I honestly didn't see what was so funny about James Potter constantly asking me out. "Yeah," she breathed, still catching her breath. "Oh, and that reminds me, Prefect, would you fill me in on the eleven uses of dragon's blood?"
I rolled my eyes. "There are twelve, and we were supposed to know those for our OWLs last year! How in the name of Merlin did you end up passing onto NEWT level?"
Marlene shrugged. "Luck?" I scoffed.
"Yeah, alright I'll help." I picked up her essay. "Alright, so changing the title to 'The Twelve Uses of Dragon's Blood' might be a good start!" I teased. We sat there for the next half an hour without interruption, allowing me to fix a the mistakes up to the conclusion of Marlene's essay. Then the portrait hole swung open, and upon hearing the unmistakable loud voice of James Potter, I decided not to look up.
"Hey! Evans! Lily Evans! Why won't you go out with me?" He shouted when he saw me. I really wished he'd shut up. I felt everyone in the common room stop talking and look at me. I didn't blush. I never did, and I didn't want to give Potter the satisfaction of knowing I cared about what he said. And, being me, I really wanted to shout back, "Huh, maybe because your a git!" or get up and 'accidentally' trip him on my way up to the dormitories, but I had to live up to the prefect badge on my chest. I caught one of his friends, Remus Lupin's (a fellow Prefect) eye, and he smiled apologetically. Meanwhile, Potter and Black roared with laughter. Sirius Black isn't much better than his best friend. He always tries to get me to go out with Potter. Slowly, the common room filled with chatter, but when I got up to leave five minutes later, having made my recommendations on Marlene's essay everyone watched me. I didn't say anything to my friends, and I was slightly annoyed with them for not being sympathetic earlier. I mean, I know I had been complaining about it immensely for about three weeks, ever since Potter had started being more of a git that he already was, but... I pushed open the door emblazoned with a '6' and entered my dormitory. Mary and Marlene entered closely behind me.
"Well," Marlene said, matter-of-factly. "He is definitely a git!" I smiled. We changed quickly into our pajamas, and I sat on the edge of my four poster, so Marlene, Mary and I could talk more.
"What will finals this year be like?" I wondered aloud. "I know they're supposed to prepare us for our NEWTs..." I trailed off.
"I dunno," Marlene said, seriously. "I hope they won't be too disastrous." She sighed, and looked as if she thought they definitely would be.
"I hope so, too," Mary agreed. "Mum would kill me if I failed...but, she needn't, 'cause I'd've done it for her!" Marlene and I laughed. Mary smiled a bit. I got into my four-poster, and pulled the red velvet hangings around me.
