"What's wrong?" James asked, looking concerned upon catching sight of my face.
"Er... Come with me!" I said, hurriedly. I explained as Sirius, James and I descended the spiral staircase from the dormitories.
"Okay, you know how Mulciber attacked Mary last year?" I asked. James and Sirius nodded. I pointed to the map. "Why are he, and a bunch of his Slytherin friends hiding behind suits of armour in the corridor Mary's walking down?"
"Good question," James said, severely. "Search me." We came across the common room, and Remus caught sight of us in our haste.
"Everything okay?" He asked, worriedly.
"Looks like Mulciber is planning to do something to Mary again--remember he almost asphyxiated her last year?" James explained, quickly, as I showed Remus the map. We burst from the portrait hole.
"Sirius and I will go through the Trophy room, where Mary was, and James, Lily, you two go around where the Slytherin scum come from," Remus suggested. It was rare to hear Remus say things like 'Slytherin scum', but Mary would've been killed if Marlene hadn't happened to have stayed late to ask Professor Slughorn a question, and been walking down the dungeon corridor at the time. Remus elaborated,
"In case one way is faster." We split up, and James and I sprinted down the staircase--before it decided to change, and were halfway down the hall, when I glanced at the map, and saw that Remus and Sirius hadn't been as lucky. Their staircase had changed to a different ending locale. I stuffed the map in my pocket, and we quietly entered earshot of the Slytherin wanna-be-Death-Eaters. I spotted the unmistakable slicked back black hair that was Sev--no. Snape. I saw James draw his wand in my periphery, and mimicked him. Snape walked from behind his suit of armour, and began talking to Mary. She folded her arms, frowned, and surveyed him disparagingly. I heard my name, and narrowed my eyes at Snape's back. My attention was entirely on them, so that it took me a while to register that Mulciber, and the other Slytherins come out from behind suits of armour going behind Mary, and beginning to surround her. They had their wands out. I bolted out from James's and my hiding spot, and shouted,
"Impedimenta!" An impending shield formed in front of Mulciber, Avery and Wilkes. Mulciber gave Severus a pointed look. He seemed to swallow hard, before turning to face me. Was he going to try to hex me? I frowned at him, wand still raised. At the last second, I realised he wasn't going to hex me.
"Diffindo!" I saw the white flash of light out of the corner of my eye. The severing charm. Invented for cutting cloth, occasionally used to cause injury or even death. I felt a pain on my right cheek, and remembered how Severus had done this exact thing to James last year, the same afternoon he called me 'mudblood'. I almost snorted. It must be their trademark move. I let out an involuntary gasp of pain, and my hand flew to my face, before I turned to face Rosier. He toppled to the ground, unconscious, before I had even thought of a spell. Was it Sev? I shook my head, he was standing, wide-eyed, staring at the blood dripping down my cheek. No. I was being stupid. It was James.
"Protego!" He shouted from behind me, a protective shield formed around us. "Episkey," he said, pointing to my cheek.
"Thanks," I said, looking up at him, feeling the skin grow back.
"Of course," he said, and smiled. He smiled right next to a stunned teenager, and three other immobile ones. Classic James. He was right to smile, for the rest was easy. Remus and Sirius appeared on the other side of the hallway, and shot a few spells to distract Mulciber and his Slytherin cronies, while I took Mary behind our shield charm. We stood at a stalemate for a while, before Mulciber get fed-up, and motioned for everyone to follow him. I sensed Snape's eyes on me, and answered with a dagger-throwing glare. He at least had the decency to look away.
