I decided not to go back to dinner, and instead seated myself in the comfy, faded armchair closest to the fire, reading. The shadows cast by the flames danced across my book (A Transfigured Tomorrow) and eventually the subtle crackling of the burning wood was drown out by the students returning from dinner. James's voice could, no surprises here, be heard over the babble of the other now sleepy and well-fed Gryffindors. Many traipsed up to the dormitories, others, like me, pulled out books, and still more continued chatting with their friends at the tables in the common room's corners.

"Lil!" Marlene shouted in greeting, sitting down next to me, making my flinch at the close proximity of her loudness to my ear. "My mum's going to get me an owl for my birthday, as a surprise! Well, it's obviously not a surprise, anymore, but that's because I got this at Zonko's," she started rummaging in a Zonko's merchandise bag, "You can ask it any question, and it will tell you the right answer! Actually, I think it's kind of faulty, because it said that Mary had a pet Chinese Chomping Cabbage, and she, well, obviously, doesn't."

I awoke early the next morning, the sun's light was just visible between the trees of the forest, but, on the eastern window, the sky was black and starless. I slowly made my way to the common room after changing into my billowing black Hogwarts robes. I made sure to avoid the creaky floorboard, and I heard the snores of my roommates, confirming that I had woken no one. I took a seat on the couch, picked up my book and shot flames at the dying fire in the hearth. The first rays of sunlight were just shining through the window, as someone sat down next to me.

"It was nice of you to cover for Remus, Lily. He just told me," the person said. I looked up at James.

"Yeah, well, hardly seemed fair not to," I responded with a grimace. "Werewolf discrimination is--" I struggled to find a word strong enough to describe it, then gave up, allowing James to silently fill in what I meant, and continued, "What reason would one possibly have?" James shrugged, shaking his head. I thought back to the events of that night. I guess that was why James had been in such a hurry to get back from Hogsmeade. Hogsmeade. It'd seemed trivial after the night's proceeding events, but... "I had fun though--I don't mean about Remus, I mean..." I paused, "Hogsmeade."

James grinned, "So did I," he said, matter-of-factly. I smiled back. His face was half in the sun, and his eyes reflected the sunlight. Only then did I realise the distance between us was closing, and we were sitting closer than I had originally thought. I could see more clearly the colour of his eyes, they had a slight hint of blue...

"Ahem," a voice behind us said, and I jumped.
