AUTHOR'S POV

"How's the dinner going?", Emily said on the phone when Beca was in the toilet. "Uh- fine I guess. Kind of snapped at her a little bit in front of her family. So-", Beca said. "But- something feels off about Alice. I noticed it from the moment she came but- I don't know, I have a bad feeling about her", she explained. "I think that's just called jealousy, Becs", Stacie's voice was heard. "Yeah- maybe. Yeah- maybe it's just that", Beca shook it off. "I should get going, I'll see you guys later", she said before hanging up and going back out. "Dinner's ready!", George yelled out.

"This is amazing, Cindy. Somehow you've managed to kill me all over again", Beca said after taking a bite of her food, making the older woman laugh. "How are things going with your project?", she asked and everyone turned to look at the brunette. "Uh- it's going great, surprisingly. I'm having a little pre-release event soon, you guys should come if you're free", she smiled. "How are your parents?", Cindy asked again. "They're doing great. They send over their regards", she smiled. "Any interesting case, Haught?", she turned to Nicole to get everyone's attention off of her. "Uh- not really. Same old robbery and petty crimes", she replied. "I am too, very excited about my birthday that we're all here for guys", Wynonna joked, making everyone laugh. The family then started chatting and catch up and Beca did her best to be polite. She nodded and smiled and laughed appropriately but every now and then she would catch Chloe's eyes on her but she shrugged it off. "Uhm- if you guys don't mind, I have something to say", Alice's voice was slightly raised and everyone stopped talking and turned to her. Chloe look at her girlfriend, dumbfounded because whatever this was, she didn't know.

"I know we just met, and you guys have yet to know more about me but I would just like to say that, I truly deeply love Chloe and I feel like, the person that she is now is only a reflection of how good of a family she has", Chloe smiled. "And I know that we haven't been together for that long but Chloe uh- gave me this promise ring a while back and I figured that it would only be right if I took the next move", Alice explained and Beca felt her heart dropped to her stomach. Please let this be something else and not what I think it is, she thought to herself. Chloe's eyes widened when Alice got down on one knee. "Chloe Anne Beale, will you make me the happiest woman on Earth and be my wife?", she pulled out a ring from her pocket and Beca's heart sank even deeper as she watch Chloe's jaw drop slightly. The room was silent and everyone was either looking at the proposal or at Beca. Everything was moving so slow for Beca, it felt like it took an hour for Chloe to get a word out. "So?", Alice asked with a smile. "Uh- yes! Yeah! Uhm- of course!", Chloe smiled as Alice got up and placed the ring on her finger before placing a small kiss on the redhead's lips. Beca felt sick. She felt like all the food she had consumed was going to come back out. The newly engaged couple hugged and everyone clapped but Beca saw something. Chloe looked into her eyes and there was- there was something in those eyes. Beca couldn't place a finger on what, but she knew something was off. She knew her Chloe. And those eyes are saying something else instead of happy. "Uhm-", Beca cleared the lump in her throat. "I need to take a call, so sorry. Uh- congrats, you two. Happy for you", she forced a smile. "Excuse me", she said before walking out of the house.

Beca leaned her back against the wall before dropping down to the ground with her face in her hands. She didn't have enough time to stop herself from breaking down right there and then. She was so consumed by her emotions and the memories that plays in her head of when they were together and she kept replaying the moment Alice proposed and how Chloe looked at her when they hugged. There's something in that look. She was talking to me, I know it, she thought to herself. She was so in her thoughts that she didn't even realise that the door opened and that someone crouched down next to her and placed their arms around her as she sobbed. "It's okay. Hey, you're gonna be okay", Wynonna said as she rubbed small circles behind the brunette's back. "I- I need to go. I can't go back in there- can you- can you just make something up? Just tell them I said sorry and- and- tell Cindy I said thank you", Beca said in between her sobs and stood up. Wynonna just nodded and watched as the girl walked away before walking back in. "Uh- Beca had a family emergency to attend to but she told me to say sorry and thank you", Wynonna smiled and everyone saw through that lie except for Alice.
