Mark's POV

"Don't move..." I heard a voice saying as I wearily opened my eyes "I'm Doctor Ross and you're at St. Mary's Hospital. Do you know what your name is?"

"..." I tried to speak but I couldn't - my throat was too dry. Damn hangover...

"Can you speak?" I heard this person say again quietly and I moved my head a bit in order to put a face to the voice "Can you tell me your name please?"

"M--- Mark..." I weakly told him. He was a middle-aged guy, same age as me father probably. He had black hair and penetrating black eyes. His strong features actually made me be a little scared, but I guessed he wasn't any Dr. Frankenstain. As soon as I replied, the doctor nodded and moved to a side, allowing me to see my mother and my father.

"Do you know them?"

"Yes, they're my parents..." I replied just for the sake of replying, but the truth is that I was too confused - why was that doctor asking me questions? I felt dizzy and when I moved my head a bit to my left, I noticed some IV lines - so that was what kept me stoned!

"What are their names?" the doctor asked me - why was he making so many stupid questions for heaven's sake? Wonder if he was insane? He was asking me questions and I was the one in a hospital bed! They surely knew who I was and who my parents were... somebody had called them!

"Mary and Keith..." I said almost in a sigh.

"And how old are you?"

"Thirty-seven..." I rolled my eyes feeling a bit more awake now. Perhaps those drugs had finished having any effect on me? "Listen Doctor---"

"Ross" he completed my sentence.

"Whatever... just tell me why the hell I am here..."

"You had an accident with your car Mr. Owen." Dr. Ross told me.

What? How could he say that I had been in a car crash? Why was he saying all that and neither my mother nor my father stopped him from speaking nonsense? I felt completely perfect, well apart from the dizziness due to that crap they were giving me and the fact that I---

"You've broken your right arm as you can see," he said and I noticed the effing white plaster in my arm. "Five ribs were injured too and there was some shoulder damage but fortunately everything's been controlled..."

"Thank you I guess? OUCH!" I tried to shrug but I couldn't - right, the shoulder... "Damn, you healed me shoulder but it hurts like shit!"

"Mark---" Mom frowned but Doctor Ross shook his head, so she kept silence and just remained standing where she was.

"Mister Owen, I am going to ask you some questions now," the doctor said "Take your time to reply to them and if you can't give me an answer it's okay..."

"Alright..." I nodded as I wondered why this doctor was speaking so slow. What, was I a foreigner who didn't understand English or what?

"Do you remember anything about the accident Mr. Owen?"

I hesitated a little before replying "No..."

"Do you know where you were going to?" he asked me and I shook me head. "How did the accident happen?"

"Dunno..." I bluntly replied. My mother let a loud sigh out and she started crying; dad wrapped his arm around her and kissed her "Mom, don't cry. I'm okay..."

"Mister Owen, please tell me just one more thing," Doctor Ross said in a serious voice and I quickly glanced up at mum and dad "What is the last thing you remember?"

"Why do you ask?"

"Mark, please," me dad said patiently "Tell Doctor Ross what is last thing you remember son... he's trying to help."

"But if I knew what he wants me to say, I would tell him!"

"Anything you remember doing recently Mr. Owen..." Dr Ross insisted and gave me a reassuring look which surprisingly... reassured me. Quite different form the sensations I felt when he gave me that scary look as I opened me eyes!

"Alright, anything I remember doing recently... let's see..." I said and twitched my mouth as I stared at the ceiling. "Anything..."

What did I do yesterday, I thought as I started to shake my head--- my mind was blank, completely blank! I barely remembered what we had been talking about for the previous---

"How long is it that we've been talking?" I asked.

"Around five minutes" Dr. Ross replied and I nodded, going back to my thoughts.

"Well---" I rolled my eyes. "I don't remember anything"

"Are you sure?"

"Was I wasted when I got here?" I asked the doctor.

"What do you mean?"

"I was pissed or something---"

"You mean drunk?" Dr. Ross asked and I nodded - didn't he understand English or what? "I don't think you were..."

"Huh... I wasn't pissed then..." I mumbled just when I thought I was remembering something. "But I went out with Doug and Jay last night... didn't we drink or what?"

"Did you?" Dr. Ross asked me.

"Yeah, we went to a club--- This place called..." gee, what was the name of this place we had been to? "Attica!" I went on as everybody listened carefully to what I was saying. "And we had some fun, you know? Talking about life and our girlfriends--- Oh my god!"

"What?" mom asked.

"Where's Helen?" I said with a smile on my face. Her face and name had just appeared in my mind.

"Who's Helen?" Dr. Ross asked.

"My fiancée..." I replied smiling and turned to mum and dad. "What, what's wrong with her?"

"Mark, you---" mom started off. "You broke up with her over a month ago..."

"What? That can't be true!" I burst out laughing "Dad, is that---?"

"Actually---" dad trailed off but the doctor interrupted him, arguing that he wanted to talk to my parents outside, if I didn't mind.

"Nah, 'tis okay... hey are the lads around?"

"Yes, do you want to see them?" Dad asked me.

"Unless the doctor doesn't wanna let them in..." I said as Mum kissed me brow before leaving.

"Oh no, it's okay..." Dr. Ross said "Just a couple of visitors at a time..."

"I'll call them" Dad told me with a smile before leaving the room.

Gee, those had been some weird minutes, I thought as I looked at all the wires and machines attached to me body.

First the doctor asking stupid questions; then me mum saying that Helen and I broke up - when we all knew we hadn't... I know that she didn't like her much but saying such a lie just because? It was just something mom wouldn't do!

As I looked around the room I was confined to, I wondered again if I had been drunk the previous night. The doctor told me he didn't think I was drunk but--- if me mates and I went to that club I surely ended up wasted - I usually end up pissed when we go out... Yeah, I was surely drunk... and that's why I had the accident Dr. Ross was talking about.
