Word Count-888
Von had a way of making love feel like a risk and a reward all at once.
Janae always told herself she wouldn't fall for someone like him. Too reckless. Too unpredictable. Too much of everything she swore she didn't need. But Von? Von made it impossible not to love him. He was the type to have you cussing him out one minute and cheesing at your phone the next. The type to pull up on you unannounced just to see your face, to fight a whole crowd just because somebody looked at you wrong.
He was trouble. And he was hers.
The Calm Before the Storm
It started with something small—missed calls, late-night studio sessions stretching longer than usual. At first, Janae brushed it off. She knew what came with loving a man like Von. But then came the whispers.
"Girl, I saw him at the club last night... wasn't that his ex in his section?"
"Janae, I ain't wanna say nothing, but you ain't been posting him lately. Y'all good?"
She ignored it. Blocked out the noise. But the doubt sat in the back of her mind, nagging at her like an itch she couldn't scratch.
So one night, when Von finally came home at damn near 4 a.m., she was sitting on the couch waiting. Arms crossed. Face unreadable.
He froze in the doorway, blinking like he wasn't expecting her to still be up. "Damn, ma, you tryna give me a heart attack?"
Janae tilted her head, voice calm but sharp. "Where you been?"
Von sucked his teeth, kicking off his shoes. "You know where I been."
"Do I?" She raised a brow. "'Cause last I checked, I ain't got no damn tracking device on you, Von. But I do know your ex was in the same club you was at tonight."
That made him pause. His jaw flexed. "Who tellin' you that bullshit?"
"So it is bullshit?"
Von sighed, walking over and crouching down in front of her, his hands gripping her knees. "Janae, you know you the only one I'm rockin' with. Yeah, she was there, but I wasn't on that. I left early, asked the guys, they'll tell you the same."
Janae searched his face, her heart warring between belief and doubt. Von had never given her a reason to question him before, but still...
"You swear?" she asked, voice softer now.
He leaned in, his forehead pressing against hers. "On everything I love, ma. You my heart, you know that."
And just like that, she melted.
Because Von wasn't the type to say shit he didn't mean.
The Other Woman
Things were good after that. Too good.
Von made an effort—calling her between sessions, pulling up on her with her favorite food, letting the world know exactly who she was.
Then one night, her phone dinged with a message that made her blood run cold.
Unknown Number: Keep thinking you the only one, girl. You gon' be real hurt.
Attached was a picture—Von at a party, a girl standing a little too close, her hand resting on his stomach.
Janae's heart slammed against her ribs.
She didn't react at first. Didn't cry. Didn't scream. She just grabbed her keys and drove straight to Von's spot.
When he opened the door, he barely got a "Wassup, baby?" out before she shoved her phone in his face.
"What the fuck is this, Von?"
He frowned, grabbing the phone, his eyes narrowing at the picture. "Man, this ain't nothing—"
"Don't do that." Her voice cracked, but she held her ground. "Don't sit here and lie to my face."
Von exhaled through his nose, stepping closer, but she backed up. "Janae, look at me. You know I wouldn't do you like that."
"Do I?" Her voice wavered. "'Cause it's real funny how I keep getting messages, real funny how people got so much to say about my man—"
"I don't give a fuck what people say." Von's voice was low now, controlled, but edged with frustration. "I only care about what you think."
Janae swallowed hard, her chest rising and falling. "Then tell me the truth."
He stared at her for a long time, something unreadable flickering in his eyes. Then, finally—
"She set me up."
Janae's breath caught. "What?"
Von ran a hand down his face, his frustration bleeding through. "She been tryna get my attention for weeks, popping up places I'm at, doin' the most. I ain't touch her, I ain't talk to her. That picture? That was her tryna make something outta nothing."
Janae wanted to believe him. She really did.
But before she could say anything, the doorknob twisted behind them.
The same girl from the picture walked in, her face lighting up in mock surprise. "Oh? You didn't tell her I was coming over?"
Janae's world tilted.
Von turned to the girl so fast, she took a step back. "Man, what the fuck is you doing here?"
"I told you I'd pull up later," she purred, crossing her arms. "Why you acting brand new?"
Janae took a shaky breath, her vision tunneling. "Von..."
Von turned back to her, his face hard. "Janae, this ain't what it look like—"
But she was already walking away.
Because no matter how much she loved him, no matter how deep
