The gym was packed. The energy buzzed through the air, a mix of nerves and excitement as the final round of the state cheerleading championship was about to begin. Janae Parker stood at the front of her squad, shaking out her hands as she took a deep breath. This was their moment.
And then, everything fell apart.
"Yo... is that—?!" one of her teammates, Lani, gasped, pointing toward the opposing team.
Janae's stomach dropped.
The squad from Southside Prep stood confidently in formation, smirks on their faces. Then the music started—their music. And the routine that followed? It was theirs too.
Janae's team watched in horror as Southside hit every single move, beat for beat, the same routine they had spent months perfecting.
"They stole our cheer!" one of the girls cried.
The betrayal burned, but there was no time to react. The judges wouldn't care. If they repeated the same cheer, they'd get disqualified.
Panic rippled through the team.
"What do we do?!"
Janae's mind raced. Then, as if by fate, she looked up—her eyes locking onto Von, standing near the front row of the bleachers.
He wasn't supposed to be here. She hadn't even told him about the competition. But there he was, hoodie up, diamond chains shining under the lights, watching her like she was the only person in the room.
Their eyes met, and he smirked, mouthing, "Y'all got this."
That was all she needed.
Janae turned to her team, voice steady. "We're changing the routine."
Their eyes widened. "What? We don't have time—"
"We do," she cut them off. "We're doing the backup stunt sequence. The one we practiced once."
Silence. Then, Lani whispered, "The one where we toss you high?"
Janae nodded.
"It's risky," another girl said.
"It's necessary," Janae countered.
The announcer called their name. This was it.
They took the floor, hearts pounding.
The music hit, and they moved. Sharp, precise, hitting every motion with power. The energy was electric, fueled by the rage of being cheated and the fire of wanting to prove they were better.
Then came the final stunt.
Janae sprinted into position. Her bases tightened their grips, preparing for the toss.
One.
Two.
Three—
She flew.
Higher than they had ever tossed her before. The gasps from the crowd echoed in the gym as she twisted midair, flipping twice before spotting her landing.
The world slowed.
Would they catch her?
Her breath hitched—then, solid hands grasped her ankles, steady, secure. She stuck the landing, arms shooting up in a perfect finish.
The crowd exploded.
Von was on his feet, chains swinging as he clapped, yelling, "Yeahhh, that's my girl!"
The team huddled together, breathless, shaking—but victorious.
And when the judges called the final score, they won.
Janae looked back at Von, grinning. He smirked, motioning for her to come over.
As soon as she was near, he grabbed her waist, pulling her close. "You cold as hell, you know that?"
She laughed, breathless. "You think so?"
"I know so." He kissed her forehead, his voice low. "Ain't nobody touching my girl."
