Serenity wasn't supposed to be here. Not like this.

She had come over like she always did, lounging at Von's spot, running her mouth, and clowning him like they'd been doing since they were kids. But tonight, something felt different.

Von had been looking at her too long, his eyes dipping down to her lips when she talked, his tongue swiping across his own like he was fighting something. She tried to ignore it, but the tension between them had been thick for months, and now? It felt suffocating.

"You tryna get me in trouble," she joked, nudging his arm as she sat cross-legged on his couch.

Von smirked, leaning back, his arm resting behind her. "How I'm tryna get you in trouble? You the one sittin' here lookin' at me like that."

She sucked her teeth, rolling her eyes, but her pulse spiked. "Like what?"

Von's smirk deepened as he tilted his head, his voice dropping to that lazy drawl that made her stomach flip. "Like you want me to do somethin' we can't take back."

Her breath hitched. Because she did. And the way his fingers brushed against her thigh like a question told her he knew.

It happened too fast after that.

One second, she was telling herself she wouldn't cross that line, and the next, Von was pulling her onto his lap, his hands gripping her waist, his lips so close to hers. Serenity's breath was shaky, her body frozen between what she wanted and what she knew was wrong.

"Say the word," Von murmured, his thumb tracing slow circles on her hip. "Tell me to stop."

She should have. But she didn't.

And then—

The front door swung open.

Von's girl stood in the doorway, eyes blown wide, taking in the sight of Serenity straddling him, his hands gripping her like he didn't want to let go.

The air in the room turned deadly silent.

Serenity scrambled off Von's lap like she'd been burned, her heart slamming against her ribs. "Shit."

Von's girl took one slow step inside, her expression unreadable before she scoffed. "Wow. Wow."

"Baby, it's not—" Von started, his voice calmer than it should have been.

"Oh, don't even start that bullshit." His girl's laugh was humorless, shaking her head as she glared between them. "So this what we doin' now? You and your best friend?"

Serenity clenched her jaw, her skin hot with guilt, but Von? He didn't even look guilty. He looked...frustrated. Annoyed. Like he was mad she walked in, not at what she saw.

"Man, you buggin'—"

"Buggin'?" His girl let out a sharp breath, blinking like she was trying to keep herself from snapping. "You know what? I'm done. Have each other."

She stormed out before Von could stop her, slamming the door behind her so hard the walls shook.

Serenity stared at Von, her pulse still racing. "Von—"

"Don't," he muttered, running a hand down his face.

She swallowed. "That shouldn't have happened."

Von leaned forward, elbows on his knees, staring at the door like he was debating chasing after her. But he didn't move. Instead, he exhaled and looked at Serenity like she was the only one in the room.

"...But it did."

Serenity barely had time to process what just happened before she heard the sound of heavy footsteps storming back toward the door.

Von's girl had doubled back.

"Nah, we not finna act like that ain't just happen," she snapped, her voice sharp with anger. Her heels clicked against the floor as she stomped toward Serenity, eyes blazing. "What the fuck was that?"

Serenity straightened her spine, her heart still racing, but she wasn't about to back down. "What it look like?"

"Oh, you real bold now, huh?" The other girl stepped closer, her jaw clenched. "You been on that type of time, or you just now deciding to be a sneaky-ass bitch?"

Von immediately stepped between them, his broad frame blocking Serenity from view as he put a hand out. "Man, chill. Don't start that shit."

His girl let out a bitter laugh. "Chill? You had this bitch all on you, and you want me to chill?" She tried to step around him, but Von shifted, keeping them apart.

Serenity's hands curled into fists at her sides, but she refused to flinch. "First of all, watch your mouth. I ain't never been sneaky a day in my life. Your man the one that can't figure out what he want."

Von turned slightly, shooting her a look. "Serenity—"

"Nah, forreal." Serenity lifted her chin, her voice even. "You mad at me like I'm the problem, but if you really wanna be mad at somebody, be mad at him." She jabbed a finger toward Von's chest. "He the one that let it happen."

Von's girl looked like she wanted to swing, but Von's grip on her wrist stopped her. His voice was low, but firm. "Man, cut that shit out. Right now."

The air in the room was charged, thick with something neither of them wanted to name. Von closed his eyes for a second, exhaling like this was the last place he wanted to be.

Then, so soft only Serenity could hear, he murmured, "I'll be back."

And just like that, he turned and walked out, chasing after his girl, leaving Serenity standing there with her chest heaving, anger and something far more dangerous simmering beneath her skin.

He didn't have to say it. She already knew.

This wasn't over.
