Faina's pov
At the Hospital
The emergency room was a blur of beeping machines and sterile white walls. I sat by Agape’s hospital bed, gripping her small, limp hand. I had never been this scared in her life. When I really thought hard about it , I had changed completely in the last two years. I was no longer the selfish snob I was before.
The doctors had run several tests, their expressions unreadable as they murmured to each other. Now, I sat frozen, waiting for answers.
Then the door burst open.
Ambrose.
He looked like he had run through a storm to get here. His usually pristine suit was wrinkled, his tie undone, his dark hair disheveled. His wild gaze locked onto Agape, then flickered to me. I ran up to him and crashed into his arms.
“What happened?” His voice was rough and urgent as he patted my back to calm me down.
“She—she collapsed, She said her chest hurt.” I said, with tears falling down.
Ambrose’s jaw tightened. He strode to Agape’s bedside, his large hand covering her small one. He looked at me again, and for the first time, I saw something raw, something vulnerable in his eyes, fear, lots of it. This man had not even shown any fear when I held him at gunpoint, I did not think he feared anything.
“She’s going to be okay,” he said, but it sounded like he was trying to convince himself more than me. Just then, the doctor walked in, holding a clipboard. His face was grave.
Ambrose straightened immediately. “Tell me. What is wrong with my daughter?”
The doctor exhaled. Kravaritis , Mrs. Kravaritis… Agape has a congenital heart defect. Her heart is failing, and she needs a transplant. we will start looking for matches immediately.”
The room went silent.
Faina felt like the floor had been ripped from under her. She gripped the edge of her chair, her breath shallow. “A transplant? She is only a little girl.” she echoed.
The doctor nodded. “We’ll put her on the donor list, but it’s a race against time. We need to prepare for all possibilities.”
“There has to be something else we can do—some treatment, some medication—” I shook my head as I explored the odds.
“We’ll do everything we can,” the doctor assured her gently. “But you should prepare yourselves.”
Ambrose swallowed hard, his hands trembling. This couldn’t be happening. Not Agape.
I found myself extending my hand to his and grabbed it to comfort him. I looked up to find Ambrose staring down at her, his expression unreadable. Then, slowly, he sank to his knees in front of her.
“This has to be a joke, just look at her. She has even turned pale as she lay there life less. I won’t let anything happen to her. I swear, Faina.” he said, his voice hoarse.
“How can you promise that?” A sob bubbled in my throat as I asked.
“Because I will move heaven and earth for you and our daughter,” he said fiercely. “I will find a way.”
I stared at him, something inside her cracking wide open.
For the first time since I had become Ambrose’s wife, I truly saw him. Not just as the man I had fought against, not just as the stranger who had married me while I was unconscious.
But as a man who loved his daughter with every fiber of his being. As a man who loved her .And maybe, just maybe…
As the man she loved.
"Hey, little princess. Don't be scared, you are going to live, I'll make sure of that. And don't even think of giving up on me. You are the mist important thing to me, little one and I won't let you go, I can't. So please fight, fight this. I will get you the heart you need just hold on my little love." Ambrose proclaimed as he held Agape's hand who then slowly opened her eyes.
" Daddy?" Agape whispered struggling to talk.
" No don't say anything, you will strain yourself." I said as I gave her a glass of water.
" I really missed you daddy and I'm sorry I scared you Mommy." She said with a sad smile.
" Well I missed you more princess. Now rest okay." Ambrose says as he gently pulled me aside.
" I'm going to find a heart for Agape. I will not return without it, I promise." Ambrose of promised but it felt more like a vow.
" Go, I will stay with her." I said.
" Take care of yourself. I will return." Ambrose said as he pulled me by my hand and crashed into me with a hug.
" While I'm gone you are in charge, Mrs Kravaritis." Ambrose said before turning around and walking away. I felt a sting inside of my chest. Something didn't feel right.
