Chapter Nine

A bright light shines in my eyes. Am I dying? No, there's a doctor. So I'm not dead. Where am I then?

I open my eyes and I'm at home. Our family doctor is in front of me.

"Hey Miranda! How are you feeling?" he asks.

I pause for a minute. "Ok, I guess. What's going on?"

"You fainted and your parents wanted to make sure you were alright, you they called me," he says.

Of course they wanted to make sure I was ok. I mean, their other daughter was just killed in a car accident.

I sit up. My throbbing head causes me to quickly lie back down.

"Sweetie, me Jasmine and your dad are going to be away for a while. You'll be staying with Patricia," says mom. I'm taken aback. "Patricia? You have GOT to be kidding be." Their faces show that they are telling the truth. "Why die sit have to be her? And where are you going?" I ask.

"My mom isn't feeling the best, so we're going to live with her for a while," replies dad.

"Why can't I go with you? I'm perfectly fine!" I say, trying to get out of bed, but my head stops me.

"I'm sorry honey but we've already made plans! Your staying with Patricia." Says mom.

I pull my blanket over my face to hide my tears.

When I come out of hiding, they're gone. My suitcase is out and all of my stuff is packed. When did they say thy we're leaving? I don't remember.

Mom comes in and sits on the side of my bed. "How are you feeling?" She asks.

"Fine," I reply, not looking her in the eye.

"I know you don't want to stay with Patricia, but we don't have a choice! Aunt Sarah is away in Tahiti on a vacation, and your grandparents live too far away."

"Can't I stay with Olivia or Jessica?" I beg.

She bites her lip. I did originally ask their parents but they feel like what happened at the party was immature of you and that your a bad influence." She says.

"What?" I whisper, taking it all in.

"It's true. I'm so sorry sweetie. I gotta go pack now. I love you." She says an she leaves.

I pull out my cellphone and text Jake

"Hey." I say.

"Hey. What's up with you?" He asks.

"Not much. I have so much to tell you."

"So do I. You want me to come over?"

"That'd be great."

"Ok. Be over in a sec."

What a great boyfriend. I'm so happy that he's here for me.

In about fifteen minutes, he knocks in my door carrying a basket of food.

I pull some of it out and find some sandwiches, grapes, bread, and Ginger Snaps, my favorite kind of cookie.

He sits on my bed.

"How are you?" He asks.

I launch in and tell him about mom dad and Jasmine going away, and me having to stay with Patricia.

"Oh Jake it's so unfair! And Olivia's parents and Jessica's parents won't let me see them and I'm just so alone and worried and--"

He leans in and kisses me on the lips.

Then he pulls away and looks at me, grinning.

"That was a really nice way I tell me to shut up." I say smugly.

"Yeah I guess it was. Are you feeling better? I want to show you something."

"Yeah I guess so but where is it? It can't be too far because--"

He leans in again and kisses me on the nose.

"Don't worry. It's not too far. Can you walk?" He asks.

"I don't know. The doctor says to take it easy."

"Then you won't have to walk at all," he says, picking me up gently.

He opens the door and walks towards the front door and carries me outside.

That's when I realize that I'm in my nightgown.

"Jake! Take me inside right now I'm in nothing but my nightgown and underwear!"

He just grins but doesn't take me inside.

"Ok you need to close your eyes now." He says.

"No," I say stubbornly.

"Fine then, I'll cover them."

He lays his big hands over my eyes.

After a while be stops and uncovers my eyes.

In front of me is a trampoline.

"You brought me to a trampoline?" I say.

"Yep! And your gonna like it," he says, sliding me under the net opening.

Then he crawls onto it with me and then wraps his arm around me, pulling me to him.

"This IS nice." I say.

He smiles.

We cuddle awhile, watching the clouds loom overhead.

Then, all of a sudden, some sprinklers start, making me jump.

Now we're soaked.

"Great. Now I'm soaked."

He just grins.

"You planned this didn't you?" I ask.

He bursts out laughing. "With a little help!" He says.

"Thanks Chase!" he shouts over into a bush.

"No problem bro! Have fun!" Chase shouts back.

I see him bound off down the alley.

"What was the point in this?" I ask.

"I thought it would be fun!" He says.

"I'm soaked to the skin!" I whine.

"Ok I'll shut it off!" He says and he walks over to the faucet.

Then, he stops, freezes, and then falls to the ground.

"Jake!" I scream, and I rush over to him. I pull him onto his back and look at him.

Then he grabs my head and pulls me down for a long kiss.

I pull back, exasperated and mad.

"I thought something bad had happened to you!" I shout.

"Aww c'mon I was just joking! Do you forgive me?" He says.

"Nope!" I say marching off.

He jumps up and runs after me, swinging me over his shoulder.

"Jake! Put me down!" I shout.

"Nope!" He says, mimicking me. "Not till you forgive me!

"Fine I forgive you!" I say, exasperated.

"Don't believe you!" He says.

I pull up so that he's holding me in a cradling position. Then I kiss him on the cheek.

He looks pleased. "Believe me now?" I ask.

"Yes. Lets go back to your house I'm tired."

"Ok," I say, burying me head in his chest, letting him carry me home.
