Chapter Eighteen

"Mom... go call the police," Jake says.

"Why?" she asks, a startled expression coming to her face.

"Rick is a wanted man," he says.

"What do you mean? Are you sure?" she questions.

"He is charged for chasing Miranda, and threatening to kill her and break another boy's arm," Jake says.

"Is this true Miranda?" she asks.

"Yes," I say, swallowing. How could Rick be here? Did he follow us? Or did he go back to Patricia's house, threatening her to tell where Jake lived? This thought sickens me. I imagine Patricia lying tied up in a corner, bleeding, maybe to death. I almost hurl.

"Patricia? Are you ok? You look a little pale," says Jake worriedly.

"We have to call the police and have them check on Patricia and her mom," I say.

"Why?" he asks.

"Because, if he went back to her house he could've hurt them!"

He slowly nods and pulls out his phone.

A few seconds later, he starts talking.

"Hello 911? Yes this is Jake Benton, I understand that you are looking for a man named Rick Stewart? Yes well, he's downstairs in my house now. I have a reason to believe that he may of gone back to his house and threatened his daughter where I lived. We're afraid he may of hurt her and her mother."

"How many of us are there? Well, me, my mom, my girlfriend, and my little brother. My little brother..." His eyes grow wide.

"Please get here as soon as possible. Our address is 225 N Oakley St." he says and he hangs up.

"I can't go down there. He'll recognize me. And Miranda can't either," he says.

"I'll go. Just stay here, and make sure you stay quiet." she walks out the door.

Jakes house has vents running all through the ceiling and walls and floors, and luckily he has a vent right over the kitchen, so we can hear everything.

"Where is he?" says Rick.

"I don't know. He was here earlier, but then he ran out about tens minutes you were here," she says.

"I see," he says. The way he says it, I can tell he doesn't believe her.

"Jamie," he says, "Where's Jake?"

"I-I don't know," he says, sounding scared.

"Really? Well, did you know that I have this really nice peanut butter cookie in my pocket that I was going to eat, but I think you should have it," he says.

"That skunk." Jake whispers.

"I can't take your cookie," says Jamie.

"Why not?" spits out Rick obviously annoyed.

"I'm allergic to peanuts," he says.

"Listen you little shrimp, you better listen to me or you'll regret it."

"Stop right there," says Jakes mom. "Mr. Stewart, you may leave. I don't want to see you around my family ever again. You here me? Get OUT!" she says, with so much force I jump.

"Halt police!" says a powerful voice from the door.

Rick's head whips around, to see the police officer. Gun drawn. Pointed at his head. I run down the stairs quickly.

"Stop!" I shout.

Rick looks at me. "You," he says menacingly. "You caused all of this."

"What did you do I Patricia?" I say, ignoring his statement.

"Patricia? Who cares about her?" He sneers.

"Well, you do for one," I say, forcefully. "I know you do. But you're too proud I admit it. And Amelia, she's one of the sweetest ladies I know. You don't deserve her. You don't deserve Patricia either."

Anger fills his face. "What do you know about parenting? Who are you to judge me? All Patricia has done is create more work for me, and Amelia is such an idiot, she's useless."

My face flushes up with anger and I feel my cheeks grow hot. "Useless? You call your own wife useless? You listen to me Rick. You could live a thousand lives and never deserve her. You are a selfish, mean, and the most undeserving man I've EVER met. You want to know something? Last week, my sister died. She was my best friend, my my flesh and blood. She meant the world to me. And now she's dead.

And you? You have a beautiful daughter and wife, that are healthy and alive. And yet you call them useless?! How dare you?!" I scream.

He stares at me stupidly. "You're right," he says.

"Oh don't give me that excuse. You know very well that--wait, what did you say?"

"You're right. I don't deserve either of them. What was I thinking. Oh no, oh what have I done! You have to get back to my house I've made a mistake I- I... Patricia!" he yells, and runs out of the house.

"Wait, stop or I'll shoot!" shouts the officer.

"No don't!" I shout. "Follow him. He'll lead us to Patricia."
