Chapter Thirteen

My side hurts and I'm breathing heavily. I stop to catch my breath. "You get one minute," I tell myself.

I hear a man shout and cower behind the trash can I'm hiding behind.

I see Patricia's dad run down the alley I'm hiding in and hold my breath.

He looks around, wipes the blood from his nose and runs off again.

*one hour previously*

RECAP:

"Great lying, but one small problem."

"Yeah, what?"

"How am I gonna arrive in half an hour without being caught by your dad?"

She goes pale. "I don't know."

Patricia's POV

I open the door a crack. Dad is nowhere to be seen so I gesture for Miranda to come along.

"But be quiet!" I whisper.

She nods her head and follows.

I check the time. 4:20! Ten minutes till Miranda is supposed to "arrive".

I tiptoe down the stairs.

Miranda follows, thankfully missing the squeaky stairs.

I open the back door and she runs out.

Right into dad.

Patricia's Dad's POV

Here's how my day's been. A terrible day at work, and I come home to an idiotic wife and useless daughter, only to find out that one of her stupid friends is coming over for a couple of days. And just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, so girl comes running out of my house and runs into me full speed!

Miranda's POV

Ouch! That'll leave a mark! I think, rubbing my cheek.

I look up to the six foot man that's staring down at me angrily.

No, scratch that. Furiously.

I back away, tripping over a root sticking up.

I see him pull out some thing, a pen maybe, no wait a knife! I crawl backwards as he walks slowly to me, knife raised up. My hand feels something. A stray baseball! I pick it up and without hesitation, throw it right at his face.

He stumbles back, and I see its caught him in the nose, and blood is flowing. He keeps backing away, as if confused, and I take this time to run.

Who cares what the doctor says. This guy is crazy, and he's determined to hurt me.

I run down a couple of blocks take random turns, and eventually end up behind some diner alley.

*present time*

Miranda's POV

After I'm sure he's gone, I peek behind the trash can. The wind has picked up, and I'm shivering and hungry.

I look in my pocket an find a twenty dollar bill. Thanks mom.

I walk up to the diner I was hiding behind and go in.

I am startled an terrified to find Patricia's dad ordering something.

I hurriedly rush to the bathroom lock myself in a stall. I pull out my cellphone and dial Jake's number.

Jake's POV

I flip my phone open and answer Miranda's call.

"Hey babe. What's up? Miranda giving you trouble?"

"Can you come get me?" she says, and I hear the fear in her voice.

"What is it? Where from? Patricia's?"

"No, from this diner called... Umm oh yeah Carl's!"

"Why what's wrong?" I ask, worried.

"Patricia's dad, he's crazy. I came after me with a knife and he's at this same diner but he doesn't know that I'm here please come get me!" she almost begs.

"Of course I'll come right now. Do you want me to call the police?" I ask.

"Yeah sure."

"Ok I'll be there in five minutes ok?"

"Ok just hurry thank you!"

"Yep anything love you!"

"I love you too! Bye!"

Patricia's POV

What's taking him so long? I peek out the bathroom door. I don't see Patricia's dad so I sneak out.

I here his voice and panic and rush into a room that says "Employees only" on the door.

I walk in and find a boy that looks my age sipping a coffee. Must be on break.

He raises his eyebrows and looks at me.

"Can't you read? The sign says employees only."

"I know I know please let me hide here this guy is after me he's wacko he has a knife and he's here please let me hide!" I whisper.

The boy's eyes widen. He's probably never heard THAT excuse.

"Is it that guy with the bloody nose?" He asks.

I nod. "Yes I threw a baseball at him to get away."

"Good. Look I'm gonna go out there and talk to my boss. Just stay here." he says.

"Ok."

"By the way, my name's Justin."

"Thanks, Justin," I say.

He nods and walks out of the room.

Justin's POV

I walk up to the guy the girl in the back described.

"Need anything sir? A water perhaps?"

"No," he answers.

I begin to walk away when he calls back.

"Wait. I have a question. I'm looking for a girl."

"Aren't we all?" I ask causally.

He scowls. "Watch your attitude son. This girl is my daughter. She ran off and I can't find her. You seen her in here?"

"I've seen a lot of girls in here sir," I say.

He growls. "She has black hair, blue eyes, and was wearing skinny jeans and a pink shirt."

I pretend to think. "Nope sorry sir. No one with those descriptions has come in today. But if you'd like to give me your number I'd be happy to call you if I see her."

"That would be great," he says and he pulls out a pen and notepad and scribbles something on it and hands me the paper. But instead of a number, I see a message that says:

"I'm not stupid boy. Now tell me where the girl is or I'll break your arm."
