[Y/N'S POV]

"Man, this place is wrecked!" I exclaimed, my eyes scanning the devastation around me. Buildings were reduced to rubble, cars overturned like discarded toys, and debris scattered across the streets. But the worst part? The pizza arcade—the very place I had been looking forward to celebrating my birthday—was completely destroyed. Smoke still curled from its remains, flickering neon signs barely clinging to life.

"So much for my birthday," I sighed, matching my pace with Sonic as we zipped through the city. Even though today was supposed to be special, any celebration would have to be put on hold. Right now, there were bigger things at stake.

Civilians were scattered throughout the streets, some helping the injured, others attempting to salvage what little they could. Every so often, I'd stop to lend a hand—lifting fallen beams, guiding lost children to safety, even helping restore power where I could. Through it all, Sonic and I kept moving, scanning every corner, every alleyway, making sure no one had been left behind. People had gone missing in the chaos, and we weren't stopping until we knew everyone was safe.

"Sorry for the birthday bash getting ruined," Sonic muttered, guilt flashing in his emerald-green eyes. "I promise I'll make it up to you. You didn't have to come out here with me, you know. You could've stayed back, taken it easy."

I smirked, nudging him playfully. "And miss spending my birthday with the hero who saved the city and gave me this awesome blue headband?" I flicked the fabric against my forehead, grinning. "Not a chance. Besides, I wouldn't want to spend my birthday with anyone but you."

I winked at him, and for a split second, amidst all the destruction, I saw the tiniest bit of pink dust his cheeks before he sped ahead to hide it.

We flirted back and forth as we ran, playful banter keeping the mood light despite the destruction around us. It was a small distraction, a way to pass the time—until a piercing wail suddenly shattered our rhythm.

We both skidded to a stop.

"Did you hear that?" I asked, my ears straining to confirm what I thought I'd heard.

"Yeah," Sonic nodded, already scanning the area. "Sounds like a kid. It's coming from over there."

He pointed toward a collapsed building. The entrance was crushed under layers of fallen debris, shattered glass glinting like jagged stars against the dusty ground. The structure was barely holding together, groaning under its own weight. No place for a child.

I didn't hesitate. With a burst of speed, I flew toward the sound, carefully maneuvering past unstable beams and loose rubble, making sure not to disturb anything that could cause a further collapse. Sonic was right behind me, his sharp eyes locked on the source of the cries.
