Lilly tugs softly at my reins as I ask her to forward to a trot. With the swish of her tail she obeys and rounds her massive neck and engages her hind end to maintain the bouncy gait. I sit deap in her saddle and squeeze softly with my calves.
We trot for three 20 metre circles before I slow her to a walk so I can work on her walk to canter transitions. Lilly takes advantage of my loose rein and drops her head and stretches.
"Don't get too comfy girl." I warn my mare.
I take up my reins and flex her head to the inside as I slide my outside leg back and keep my inside leg behind her girth and squeeze. Lilly immediately picks up on my aid and hops into a comfortable canter. Lilly's canter is as comfortable as a rocking chair.
I continue working on lead changes and transitions for the rest of my 30 minute workout then I slow to a walk to cool down.
I lead Lilly to the wash bay where I untack her and give her a quick hose. I go over her coat with a sweat scraper and take her out to the paddock. I unclip her halter and watch her as predicted roll in a big patch of dirt.
"Huuunna!" I call to Kahuna.
He perks his ears and nickers softly at my voice.
"Hello big boy." I coo to the massive horse as I walk over and fasten the halter to his head.
Kahuna drops his head and rubs his forehead on my shoulder. I giggle at how adorable this looks.
I lead him out to the flattest part of the paddock where I clip the lunge rein to the halter and let him out.
Instantly the gentle giant turns into a fiery brumby and starts crow hopping and squealing at the flick of my lungs rein. I roll my eyes and after more pig roots I finally get him into a working trot.
I lunge him 5 minutes each way then lead him back to the stable. Kahuna droops his head with tired eyes and pushes his nose softly into my back as I lead him. I scratch him in his favourite spot on his cheek.
Why can't all boys be as sweet as this
I think to myself.I get in the stables and tie kahuna loosely to a post, while I prepare an ice boot for him to cool his leg.
I slip the boot on his hind leg and secure it, then leave him to stand with it for 10 minutes. I slump against the wall of the stable while I wait for the 10 minutes to pass.
I rest my head against the wall and close my eyes.Suddenly the silence is broken by the sound of my phone ringing.
My eyes snap open and I grab my phone, my eyes adjust and my heart sinks. No other than the boy who is causing my heartache is calling,
Chase.
I consider rejecting the call. I am not ready to confront him, what would I say? Is he calling to apologise? Does he want me back? All these thoughts run through my mind as the phone keeps buzzing. Finally I get the courage to answer it,
"Hello?" I squeak
I wait for a response and muffled noise comes from the other line,"HEYYY!!!" A drunken girls voice yells from the phone.
It is definitely not chase. My heart sinks in disappointmentI gulp hard, I recognised the high pitched voice.
"What do you want Gi-Gi." I say through gritted teeth.
"Ay Liv I just wanted to let you know I just had the best sex of my life with Chaaaaseeeee." She teases.
I can tell she's drunk.
Gi-Gi is only 16 and the legal drinking age in Australia is 18.
What hurts most is I can hear muffled laughter in the background which I can't help but assume is Chase and all of his mates.
"Thanks for the update Gi-Gi I really appreciate it." I speak calmly although I feel tears forming in my eyes.
"Listen bitch. Chase and I are intimate now so you better make sure you stay the f**k away from him. Is that clear?" She hisses through the phone, sweetening her voice at the end."
"Crystal." I spit as I hang up the phone in a hurry.
I want to cry.
I want to cry so bad but I hold my tears back. Instead I stand up and take off Kahuna's ice boot and let him out in the paddock with Lilly.
Never again will I cry over him.
Never again will I cry over the selfish jerk,
Chase Emerett.
