Yes an actual one shot this time!

James Potter was the guy every Hogwarts' boy secretly wished they could be. James Potter is charismatic, funny, charming, popular, not to mention Gryffindor's star quidditch player. James Potter was that one person who walked into the room and caught everyone's eye with a contagious laugh and beautiful smile, I mean, it was impossible not to fall in love with him.

Regulus Black was the guy every person and their shelf of romance books dreamt of. Regulus Black didn't need to say a single word for people to have their eyes him, he was already the centre of attention as soon as he entered a room, the mysterious character everyone couldn't help but wonder about.

James watched as Regulus lent against one of the pillars across from the central hall, rarely talking but intently listening to whatever his friends were saying. James had taken note of that, "friends", Regulus was very selective about his company and who he chose to associate himself with. For example, Regulus would be seen in group scenarios with Snape but by no means did that bring Snape to the same level Barty Crouch Jnr or Evan Rosier were at.

James was half listening to Pete talk about the accident that had happened in potions class, he heard the basics, something about Sirius and Snape fighting again which caused Lily's cauldron to explode which then resulted in Lily hexing the both of them.

Sirius and Snape were both in the infirmary now.

This wasn't out of the ordinary though, and James was quite proud as he had noticed Lily standing up for herself more and more, her confidence remarkably growing since becoming closer with Marlene and Mary. As for Sirius and Snape, well it would be concerning if anyone saw them actually getting along.

Another thing that wasn't out of the ordinary was James admiring Regulus, except this time something unexpected happened, Regulus was staring back. James clicked out of his trance and smiled but Regulus simply narrowed his eyes before returning his gaze back to the conversation. Pete noticed where James' attention was,

"Don't get me wrong, I totally get it, but mate I'm telling you now. Do not get involved with Regulus Black, don't even try and go there"

"Who said anything about me getting involved?"

"You've been staring at him the whole time, I'm not an idiot James."

"I never said you were" James frowned, genuinely thinking his friend thought so little of himself.

"Oh you sweet summer child, yes I know, what I'm saying is that I'm not blind and clearly you think you've got a chance getting- getting on at least his good side"

"I don't know what you're talking about"

Pete watched as a Ravenclaw boy whispered amongst his friends before slowly approaching Regulus, "watch this"

James turned and watched the interaction begin, during the entire thing Regulus remained unreadable as the Ravenclaw continued to speak to him like they were friends, Regulus said something but James couldn't quite catch the exact words, he did notice however that the boy had now turned away and was holding back tears as he left.

James turned back to Pete, "poor thing"

Pete nodded, "if you ever need a counter argument to 'the worst thing they can do is say no' well there's your proof"

James nodded, he told Pete he wasn't interested in Regulus and that to his knowledge the only thing the two had in common was quidditch anyway so they might as well leave. After finishing that sentence though, James couldn't quite shake the feeling he was being watched and turned around to catch Regulus staring at the last second before quickly looking away again. James smiled to himself, surely Regulus wasn't that cold hearted.
