Rohan
I can't believe that Ria gave up her ring - that her father gave her on her twenty first birthday - so that Alina and Karan would stay happy. Some may think that she's acting like mother Theresa but to me, she's just a great friend, a real human being. Her 'act of kindness' today just made me love her even more.
"Here take this." I whispered in Karan's ear and pushed the ring into Karan's hand.
"Where did you get this from?" He looked at me in shock.
"Does it matter?" I said.
"Yes, Rohan! I need to pay that person back." He said.
"Nope. You don't need to. It's Ria's, she's giving it to her best friend - and don't you worry I'll be giving her a better one." I smiled.
"Oh thank you, Rohan!" He man-hugged me again.
"Don't thank me, thank Ria!" I laughed.
The hall was pretty much filled with guests by now. Ria stood with Alina and a couple of other girls. They looked like they were enjoying themselves.
"Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen." Uncle - that is Alina's dad, by the way - called on the microphone, "Thank you all for coming to celebrate my daughter's engagement. I am sure every father feels uneasy when he sees his little girl grow up and make decisions on her own, but I have a great feeling about this young man - Karan, and that makes this a whole lot easier. I let her hand go when she learned to walk, taught her to ride a bike and drive a car. So you'd think I'd be ready for this next step. Meeting her fiancé helped make it easier—I liked him right away. I respect that he came and asked me for her hand. But I insisted that he take the whole girl instead." Everyone laughed and he carried on, "It is going to be hard to let her go—but I can't imagine a better man to share her life with. Please raise your glasses and join her mother and me in celebrating this fantastic engagement!" With that he raised the hand with a glass filled with champagne and hugged Aunty with the other hand.
"Cheers." Everyone said in sync and lifted their cups too.
"It's time to exchange the rings now, so Karan - my boy - come around and lets do this!" Uncle called.
"Coming." Karan and I walked over.
Ria
Rohan came and stood beside me. Alina wanted to put the ring on his finger first so he let her. She had made a special, golden ring with his and her initials on it. It was really cute, to be honest. Next it was Karan's turn. He hesitated to put the ringer on Alina's finger, he looked up at me in confusion, I gave him a reassurance smile and he finally gave Alina the ring.
Everyone began clapping and a few party poppers also went off releasing ribbons and silver and golden paper into the air.
Alina and Karan hugged her parents and came towards us.
Karan came with a huge smile and hugged me first.
"Thanks for the ring." He whispered in my ear.
I smiled and said, "My pleasure."
Next it was Alina's turn. She came with a bigger smile than Karan and hugged - hugged me real tight.
"Thanks for giving up your ring, Ria. I love it!" She whispered in my ear, surprising me.
"How-How did you know?" I asked surprised.
"Please, I don't know about you but you're my best friend - I know that this ring was given to you by your dad and you're really close to him. Thank you for giving it up for me." She explained and hugged again.
