His Ghost

One man pursued me,
and I made sure my heart answered him.

He made a promise—
said he would wait.
So I stayed where he left me,
measuring time in hope.

Twelve years later,
I am still here,
listening for footsteps
that never learned how to return,
wondering if promises
expire when no one is watching.

Then his best friend found me
at my lowest point.

When the ground gave way beneath me,
he became my shoulder,
my quiet place to rest.
He was a warmth I didn't know
my heart had been shivering for.

He filled the spaces
the first man abandoned.
He became my world—
not loudly, not suddenly,
but in the way gravity happens.

And then he left too.

Chose another woman,
and with that choice,
proved that even those who hold you together
can still let you fall.

Now I carry two ghosts:
one who promised and never returned,
and one who stayed long enough
to feel like home
before teaching me
that even home can leave.
