Maggie had just gotten off the phone with Lawrence when she decided to go to the study and get a few materials she needed to send to him.
She had lived in the Gnah mansion for what could amount to 25 years, and the situation now was not what it was then. The barriers were weakening, and the first sign was the number of accidents and missing people reports.
She worked around the clock to make sure she buys them time, but the enemies know this as well as her.
Anya was ready to carry the crown.
The King Empire gets one emperor every 4 years after the last with the seeker ability, but it has been 20 years since the last guy, so the situation can't get any worse than what it is now.
As she walked down the hall, she noticed the door to Louis' room open. Slightly only. But she could see inside. Michael had a habit of coming to just sit in his father's room.
She peeked inside and decided to just go in. As she made her way across the floor, she noticed something. The room was huge with a king-size bed at the very centre against the right wall and a desk to the left directly opposite the bed. A dressing table that was his wife's, and a bunch of sofas across from the door. Diana's table was out of place.
Maggie made her way to it. She hadn't been in the room in a while, and each time she was, she was preoccupied with something else, like the investigation of the death or Anya fainting with the doors locked or lice infestation that was a horror movie on its own.
But with her good memory, it wouldn't pass her. She scanned the table without touching it, then she pulled out gloves from her blazer pockets and put them on as she squatted down to scan the drawers, too. Nothing wrong.
But knowing Louis, the problem was at the back of the drawers. Why? Because he was the worst at hiding documents, and his wife complained about it like a broken radio. She carefully removed the first drawer, then used her phone to light the drawer frame, and she saw nothing.
She did the same with the next two, but the third one was golden! She saw a brown paper envelope taped to the back of the drawer. That's why it made the table go out of place...
After removing the envelope and placing everything back into its place, Maggie went around removing all traces of human existence in the room, then left. She hoped no one had seen her since she had to imagine Louis had hidden it from his family for a reason. But he also knew she would find it, like she always did, his very horribly hidden Easter eggs.
She slipped into the study and first sent Lawrence the documents he had asked for, then settled into the envelope. It was A5 size with the office address of Louis' law firm plastered on the top. It's now Lawrence's address. She didn't see who sent it. So she opened it. The seal had long since been removed.
The envelope had some medical records she couldn't begin to make out, but she recognised some drugs. One is used for preserving dead bodies. Why would he need that? She Wondered.
The other contents were black and white photos of what were bullet holes on a body. The last photo in the lot was what made Maggie drop the envelope she held. She couldn't believe it.
She ran through the systems on her computer. Looking for purchases made to any hospitals up to 20 years ago; it sounded like a bloody waste of time, but she had to. She had to make sense of all this, or she might top herself. Like I almost did 20 years ago.
"Fuck!" she yelled in anger. There were no purchases of such drugs or any talk of hospitals taking large sums of money. Before she could think further, the door opened. Maggie hid the papers and watched as Lawrence walked towards her. "I take it the meeting was a sham?" She asked. Her slight Russian accent was light on her tongue.
To Maggie, Lawrence was a rich, handsome and charismatic man. Most women died for him, but she knew he was too weak to lift. The looks were better when he was a teen, but now they're useless.
"I'd rather seduce his grandma than do that again." Lawrence complained, "I mean, he makes being rich sound like a crime."
"We'll get the next contract. The city needs funding for the sports tournaments anyway. The season is beginning."
"We hope so," Lawrence said as he took a seat across from Maggie. "Now, are you gonna tell me why you yelled before I got in? I heard from across the hall"
Maggie first chewed on this. She had to tell him because she trusted him, and maybe he could get answers from his social circles. She slowly retrieved the envelope from the drawer and passed it to Lawrence.
Lawrence picked it up and quietly ran through the pictures and reports, then, when he saw the last one, he cursed under his breath." Who's this Dr Foxx guy anyway?"
"What was I searching for?" Maggie looked at her watch. "Been here 3 hours and none came up."
Lawrence picked up the last photo again and then looked at it carefully, "This looks exactly like her. But she died. You jumped off a freaking waterfall with her dead, I'm your arms." He shook his head and added, "If the bullets didn't do the job, the waterfall did it then." He then tossed the papers on the table.
Maggie knew he would ask, so she went about telling him how she found the envelope.
"Still move with gloves, huh?" Lawrence wondered.
"Old habits. My wife hated it, though. Now I'm not so sure..." Maggie felt the ring on her chain necklace." Kris could be alive for all I care."
