Goldpaw jolted awake as a crash of thunder rumbled through the sky. The rain poured from the clouds. The whole clearing was drenched in mud and rain. The fresh-kill pile had little soggy pieces of prey in it. Most of the cats were in their dens. Then, Blacktail slipped out of the warriors den. Almost immediately, Blacktail was soaked. His fur clung to his frame, making the strong tom look small. Blacktail started barking orders for patrols. It must be dawn. Or, well, close to it.
"Tigerlily, take Goldpaw with-" Blacktail shook his head and corrected himself. "Oops! I mean, well, go on your own. Take your choice of cats for a hunting patrol. Now for dawn patrol..." Tigerlily glimced at the medicine cat's den and then went to the warriors den to pick her cats. Goldpaw frowned.
"Why you making that face, dormmouse?" Darkpaw's mew made Goldpaw jump.
"I, uh..." Goldpaw began.
"Darkpaw!" Frostpelt scolded. "Don't scare her like that! Wonder if her wounds reopen?" Goldpaw blinked in confusion. She cocked her head to one side.
"I thought I could go back today..." Goldpaw whimpered. It was so boring in the medicine cat's den!
"Well, I want to keep you here until sun-high." Frostpelt meowed. Why was she so worried? The scent of a mouse filled Goldpaw's nose. Her stomach rumbled and her mouth watered. Bronzepaw slipped in the medicine cat's den, soaked to the skin. He gave his fur a bit of a shake, but managed to get Frostpelt and Darkpaw wet. It looked like he tried to avoid getting Goldpaw wet.
"I thought you might be hungry." Bronzepaw mewed as he dropped the mouse at Goldpaw's paws. Goldpaw stared at it. He's so kind!
"Thanks Bronzepaw!" Goldpaw mumbled happily as she took a bite. The tiny creature was still warm. She was about to take another bite, but then stopped herself. "Hey, uh, want to share?" She pushed the mouse toward Bronzepaw.
"No, I think you should-" Bronzepaw insisted.
"I want to share it." Goldpaw mewed. "I haven't shared any fresh-kill with any cat in forever!"
"You mean in about 4 days?" Darkpaw teased as she organized a herb. It was definately comfery. Darkpaw told Goldpaw that once while Goldpaw was searching for ticks in the elders' den.
"Well, it felt like forever!" Goldpaw groaned and rolled over on her back. It was boring in here! She couldn't wait to get back to training!
"Fine... I'll take on bite! Just one, and you eat the rest. I've already eaten a sparrow." Bronzepaw finally gave in. He bent down and took a bite, then pushed it back toward Goldpaw. Goldpaw purred and finished the mouse. Suddenly, Frostpelt sighed.
"Go ahead, Goldpaw, you can go." Frostpelt mewed.
"Yes!" Goldpaw jumped up and dashed for the clearing.
"Wait!" Frostpelt's hiss made Goldpaw freeze. "Be careful, ok? Come back everyday for more marigold. I don't want any infection." Then Frostpelt nodded and Goldpaw raced out into the clearing. Everyone greeted her. But a sudden weight tackled her down onto the ground. Blinking the grit from her eyes, Goldpaw saw Bronzepaw on top of her.
"I declare this territory for Bronzeclan!" Bronzepaw mewed. "If you want it back, Goldstar," Bronzepaw winked. He was starting Goldpaw's favorite game! "You'll have to fight me!"
"Then so be it!" Goldpaw hissed playfully. "This territory belongs to Goldclan! And you know that, Bronzestar!" Goldpaw swung her hind paws under his and made him collapse. Then Goldpaw jumped onto his back, claws sheathed.
"No! This territory is for Grayclan!" A playful yowl sounded behind Goldpaw. She whipped around to find Graypaw lauching himself at her. Goldpaw jumped aside, and Graypaw crashed into Bronzepaw. In the jumbling play-fight, Goldpaw hadn't noticed a dark shadow creeping up on her. The figure pinned her to the ground.
"How about Fernclan..." The figure mewed, deeply.
