Cats were starting to settle into their nests. Fernpaw was no where to be seen. Goldpaw was laying awake in her nest, waiting for moonhigh. For some reason, she felt nervous. Bronzepaw's warmth calmed her a little. She liked watching him sleep. He was curled up into a little ball, his breathing deep. Sometimes he would smile in his sleep. It was... cute. Watching his flank rise and fall made Goldpaw tired. Her eyelids drooped. They slid down over her eyes and she began to dose.

                       *************************************************************************

A twig snapped. Goldpaw's eye flew open. She looked around. Was it moonhigh? Did I miss it?! Goldpaw thought frantically.

"What's up with you?" Bronzepaw mewed, groggily.

"N-nothing." Goldpaw lied. She hated lying to Bronzepaw, it made her stomach churn. "I can't sleep. I'm going for a walk."

"Want me to come with you?" Bronzepaw offered.

"No!" Goldpaw's whisper was louder than she intended for it to be. "I mean... I need to be alone. Sorry." Bronzepaw looked a little hurt, but he nodded and went back to sleep. Goldpaw's paws itched to get moving.  She looked at all of the apprentices sleeping. No one was awake. She snuck out of the den and hid in the shadows. Lavenderheart was guarding. When the she-cat was looking in a different direction, Goldpaw swiftly dashed into the dirt place. She screwed up her face at the strong smell.

Goldpaw squeezed herself through the tiny hole. It was the same hole she used as a kit to go to the gathering. But, this time she struggled to get through. She was bigger. With heaving effort, she managed to slip out and only leaving a small tuft of fur. She made her way through the forest. She made sure to stay in the shadows, just in case there were any cat hunting for a  night snack. After a few fox-lengths, the Great Maple was in sight. But Fernpaw was no where to be seen! Goldpaw tasted the air. Not a single stale scent. Goldpaw crept forward. When she was about  two mouse-lengths away from the Great Maple, something rammed Goldpaw and pinned her to the ground. Goldpaw's yelp was cut off when the attacker cuffed their paw over her muzzle. Eyes wide, Goldpaw slowly looked up to find a black cat standing over her. His different colored eyes looked familiar. Fernpaw.

"I see that you came." Fernpaw meowed deeply. He removed his paw from her muzzle.

"Well, you said we need to talk." Goldpaw replied while getting up and shaking the dirt from her pelt. "And why did you tackle me?" Fernpaw just shrugged.

"Listen, I've had my eye on you for the past few moons... Ever since you became an apprentice, that is." Fernpaw sighed.

"Oh, believe me, I've noticed..." Goldpaw muttered.

"And... I see I have competition with Bronzepaw." Fernpaw growled.

"Competition? Wha...?" Goldpaw questioned.

"You mean... You don't-" Fernpaw looked at Goldpaw like she grew two heads. "Never mind." They sat in silence for a little bit. It was uncomfortable. Goldpaw had to break it.

Goldpaw turned to say something, but right at that moment, Fernpaw leaned toward her a kissed her.
