The sun's bright light woke Goldpaw. She squinted at the light. It was just before sunhigh. Bronzepaw was sleeping peacefully beside Goldpaw. She looked at him. His flank was covered in herb poultices and cobwebs. It rose and fell, just like it did every other day. Fernpaw's nest was empty. Of course, his warrior ceromony was going to happen today. Then, Goldpaw remembered last night. She shuddered at the memory.
***************************************FLASHBACK***********************************
On they way back to camp, Bronzepaw leaned on Goldpaw. No one said a word. Fernpaw hung his head as he trotted. They sure caused an uproar when they entered the camp. Saphirestar was pacing. Sunlight, Bronzepaw's mother, was freaking out. Stoneheart, Bronzepaw's father, was trying to calm her, though he was looking like he was about to freak out also. Poppyleaf shrieked.
"Fernpaw!" She wailed. Nightpaw, Fernpaw's sister, whipped her head around and looked at her brother. They both bounded over to the three injured cats. Everyone looked at them. Saphirestar dashed over to Goldpaw and frantically licked her. Sunlight and Stoneheart frantically rushed over to Bronzepaw. The crowd of cats overwhelmed Goldpaw. The voices jumbled together. Goldpaw was so confused. She closed her eyes tightly to try to block it out. But she couldn't
"Everybody! Stop crowding them!" Frostpelt screeched. Everyone looked back and walked away from the injured cats. Frostpelt and Darkpaw trotted toward them. "Thank you. Now, come to my den so I can treat your wounds." She took the them to the medicine cat's den.
Frostpelt quickly tended to the cats' wounds. When she put the last piece of cobweb on Goldpaw, she sighed.
"Ok, what happened?" Frostpelt sighed. Her purple eyes gleamed with worry as she glanced outside of the den. Saphirestar paced and Blacktail tried to persuade her to go get some rest. Frostpelt looked back at Goldpaw, expectantly.
"I.... er..." Goldpaw fumbled.
"A fox attacked us." Fernpaw mumbled. He sounded bitter. Goldpaw was astonished that he would lie to a medicine cat. Bronzepaw nodded his head a little. Frostpelt rolled her eyes and whispered something in Darkpaw's ear. Darkpaw nodded and grabbed some thyme. She strolled out of the den.
"What really happened?" Frostpelt meowed plainly. Fernpaw's eyes widened as he realized Frostpelt as seen through his lie. Bronzepaw's tail flicked. Goldpaw sighed.
"We were fighting..." Bronzepaw finally confessed. Fernpaw growled as he said the truth. Frostpelt shook her head, sighing.
"You guys are good friends!" Frostpelt mewed. "You shouldn't be fighting."
"Pssh!" Fernpaw mumbled. "Friends. Yeah right." Frostpelt ignored his mumble.
"Well, what are you going to tell the clan?" She questioned. Goldpaw hadn't thought of anything to say yet. They couldn't tell the clan, "Oh, Bronzepaw and Fernpaw were fighting over me because they love me." No, just no.
"Maybe we should go with what Fernpaw said." Goldpaw suggested. "A fox attacked us." Fernpaw smirked in Bronzepaw's face.
"Ha!" Fernpaw chuckled. "Told you she liked me! She just hasn't realized it!"
"You little..." Bronzepaw growled.
"Stop!" Frostpelt snapped. "Great Starclan! Graypaw was right, you two fight like kits!" Fernpaw and Bronzepaw frowned at each other and looked back at Frostpelt. "Now, we'll use Fernpaw's excuse since we can't think of anything else. Although, it seems unlikely that three apprentices fought of a fox on their own... But it's more believable than you all fighting off a badger." The three apprentices nodded in agreement.
****************************END OF FLASHBACK***************************
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey, join me beneath the Tall Crystal for a clan meeting." Saphirestar's yowl made Goldpaw jump. Goldpaw sighed and got up. She arched her back in a stretch and yawned. Bronzepaw was still sound asleep.
"Bronzepaw." Goldpaw whispered, while nudging him softly. Bronzepaw moaned. "Come on, Bronzepaw. Saphirestar just called everyone for a meeting." Bronzepaw opened his blue eyes and they were fixed on Goldpaw. Goldpaw smiled. Bronzepaw smiled back as he got up. He grunted and stumbled. Goldpaw caught him before he fell.
"Thank you, Goldpaw." Bronzepaw mewed. Goldpaw nodded, blushing. They both padded out of the medicine cat's den and sat with the other cats.
"Today, we have two apprentices that have reached the end of their training." Saphirestar meowed. "Fernpaw and Nightpaw, please step forward." Fernpaw and his sister, Nightpaw, stepped forward.
"I, Saphirestar, leader of Crystalclan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down of these two apprentices. They have trained well and hard to understand your noble code, and I wish to make them warriors in their turn." Saphirestar continued. "Fernpaw and Nightpaw, will you uphold the warrior code, even at the cost of your lives?" They both nodded. "Then, by the power of Starclan, I give you your warrior names." She paused for a heartbeat. "Nightpaw, from now on, you will be known as Nightfall. Starclan honors your kindness and curiosity. Fernpaw, from now on, you will be known as Ferntail. Starclan honors your strength and bravery." Saphirestar touched her nose to two new warriors. They both licked her shoulder. With a flick of Saphirestar's tail, the meeting was over. Ferntail smiled with pride as his name was cheered. Goldpaw and Bronzepaw weren't cheering. They both glanced at each other. Nightfall was blushing shyly. One thought went through Goldpaw's mind.
Now that Ferntail is a warrior... Will he try to hurt Bronzepaw like he did last night?
