...

I sprawl on Jobe's couch. His house easily tops mine—it's always clean, always smells fresh.

"Say, wanna watch something? After I'm done?" he calls from the kitchen.

We're hanging out together on a lazy Friday afternoon, like we usually do. Outside, the air is chilly and smells faintly of an incoming storm. I adjust my hoodie, shivering a little. Jobe's parents hate turning the heater on. They say it's bad for the environment... which it is. He's in the kitchen baking cookies for his mum's work party, and if he can figure out how to turn the oven on, the house should warm up a little.

Jobe and I have been best friends since primary school. It's funny to think that sitting next to the boy crying over his skinned knee would lead to a near-lifelong friendship.

And most people see opposite gender friendships as risky, maybe even a gamble with feelings. But we swore in secondary school that we would never, under any circumstances, ever act upon any feelings... should we have any. And so far? Our pact has worked out pretty well. I know I can talk to him about any boys in my life, and vice versa. Not to speak of myself too highly, but I think we're pretty good at the whole friendship thing.
