...

Lamine had always fascinated Pau. It wasn't any sort of secret—Pau openly admired the witty, brown-skinned boy. Back in the La Masia days, Pau would observe the way he laughed so openly and spoke so surely; he commanded every room's attention with his infectious effervescence. Maybe it was respect. Maybe it was envy. Hell, it could've been both.

He knew Lamine like the back of his hand—he knew the way he avoided eye contact in serious situations, the way he would run from his problems instead of facing them, how he took pinky promises as serious as a blood bond. No small detail was insignificant.

After all, they were best friends.

No secrets existed between the two.

Pau had always considered himself more of a listener, feeler, and thinker. He was glad he had someone like Lamine in his life—how boring would training be without his stupid jokes and borderline offensive pranks? Nevertheless, he appreciated the way Lamine would always include him, always find ways to loop him into the team's inner circle.

It shouldn't have been such a startling surprise to a 13-year-old Pau when Lamine pulled him aside after practice one day to tell him with wide, mischievous eyes that he had kissed a boy off a dare.

Pau remembered gaping, not sure what emotion to express and how to respond. Lamine had quickly clapped a hand over his mouth, giggling and flushing at the thought of an outlandish reaction. Sheepishly, Lamine had dropped his hand and egged Pau on.
