"It doesn't matter what the password is, Naruto—I know it's you! You finally showed up!" Sakura yelled.

We all stood in silence, exchanging uncertain glances.

"Naruto, get out of here!" I shouted. I was grateful he was here, but this Grass ninja was out of our league.

"What are you thinking? You don't know what you're up against! Get out of here! Run!" Sasuke yelled, his voice sharp with urgency.

"Leave now while you still can!" I added.

"So, Naruto... you managed to escape from my friend. Well done," the Grass ninja said, her lower body coiled around a tree trunk just a few feet from me.

"Okay, I don't know what's going on here, but you've been picking on my friends—and maybe my future girlfriend—and I don't like that. So you better slither back into your hole, snake lady, before I make a pair of shoes out of you," Naruto shouted, winking at me.

He was going to get us killed. There was no way we'd escape this without casualties. I needed to act—but what? I racked my brain for an idea, but Sasuke's voice cut through my thoughts.

"You can have it," he said.

We all turned toward him, confused.

"The scroll, right? That's what you want. All right then, take it and leave us alone. Ryuko, take the scroll out."

I hesitated, torn, but slowly reached for my pocket—until Naruto suddenly protested.

"Huh?! Sasuke, what are you talking about? You can't hand over the scroll to the enemy! There's no way! What's wrong with you?!"

"Shut up and stay out of it," Sasuke snapped.

I stood frozen, uncertain. I wanted to continue the exam—but I also wanted to survive.

"Hm. Very wise. Very sensible," the Grass ninja purred. "Sometimes the helpless prey realizes their only hope is to distract the predator with something even more precious."

We locked eyes with her, and I reluctantly took out the scroll, handing it over to Sasuke.

"Here. Just take it," he muttered, tossing it toward the enemy.

Midair, Naruto leapt from the branch and snatched it up.

"Naruto! Stop trying to be the hero all the time—you're going to get us all killed!" I shouted as he landed beside Sasuke and punched him square in the face.

"Naruto, what is wrong with you?!" I glared at him.

"You stupid fool—you don't know what you're doing!" Sasuke growled.

"I may not know the password," Naruto panted, "but I know who I am. You're the one I'm not so sure about. How do we even know you are who you say you are?"
