Jenny's lips still burned from where Mac had kissed her as she rode into Beaver Hollow that evening, arriving just as the sun slipped below the horizon. Camp these days lacked the jovial, happy air she'd grown accustomed to during her time running with Dutch's Boys, taking more a funerary tone as she took in the relative silence of the small clearing outside the cave.
Relative because there'd always be a hum of activity wherever people congregated like this, but because of the lack of guitar or harmonica music, singing, and Cain's barking, things sounded silent. Everyone kept to themselves and spoke in hushed tones as though trying to keep each other from overhearing their conversations. It was hard to believe that a gang which had once brought Jenny so much joy now made her so sad.
"Welcome back Little Bird, or whatever it is they call you now," Micah sneered at her as she tied Moondancer to a hitching post and set to taking his saddle off to prepare him for staying the night here. Micah happened to be nearby brushing Baylock lovingly, and it seemed he'd picked the perfect time and place to harass her. As if Jenny needed any more proof that the universe was against her.
"It's Hummingbird, you asshole," she grumbled, "And not even Arthur calls me that. It's a name I'm only comfortable with the Indians using because they're the only ones who can truly grasp its full meaning to me."
"Hummingbird, Blackbird, whatever," he chuckled meanly, patting Baylock on the rump. "I've got a bed needs warmin'. How's about you let old Black Lung sleep by himself tonight and come snuggle with me instead, hm? I'll make it worth your while."
Jenny felt nauseous, and it took the effort of every bone in her body to keep from screaming like an animal as wave after wave of pain and rage washed over her soul. Instead, she merely sighed, rolled her eyes, and said, "Fuck off, Micah. You still owe me money from Blackwater."
"And Clemens Point, unless I miss my guess," he chuckled. "I figured that fuck was so good for you that you'd forgiven me my Blackwater debt, hm? You used to bring it up all the time before Clemens Point, and after that rainstorm you never mentioned it again."
"Didn't feel much like speaking to my rapist, I suppose," she growled. The pain in her soul became nigh unbearable, and she could feel her fingers closing around the cold, black wood of her right Schofield. The rattlesnake carving on it felt rough and familiar in her palm and she was seconds from drawing the gun when she heard coughing behind her.
"Get lost, Micah," she heard Arthur growl in a rough, gravelly voice. "You know damn well what you did to this poor girl, and if I catch you sniffin' around after her again, I'll tie you up and hand deliver you to the Murfree Brood myself so you can see firsthand what it feels like to be raped."
Micah merely grinned nervously and took a step back. Jenny glanced behind her at Arthur to see his whole face dark and shrouded in shadow. His expression was so vengeful and angry that it almost frightened her until she remembered it was Micah his anger was currently directed at.
