Neutral Nation – Vladura
While the snow settled softly upon the rooftops of Vladura, Prince Gourmet of the Aetesian Empire approached the grand ballroom's entrance, his gloved hands clasped tightly behind his back. The warmth of the Gadetian Castle barely touched him; his sharp gaze was fixed not on the men and women gathered outside but on the darkness gathering beyond the snow-dusted city.
He had just received the latest reports, which were all but grim.
The eastern coastline of the empire lay in chaos. Coordinated bombings crippled critical factories and naval facilities along key cities such as Lisvant, Karish, and Dervesk. Entire shipyards were in flames, and munitions plants, vital to the empire's resupply efforts, had been reduced to smouldering ruins. The blows had been precise, deliberate, and devastating. Panic now gripped the coastal provinces, the once-untouchable Aetesian homeland bleeding in places it never had before.
Prince Gourmet's jaw tightened as he recited the intelligence aloud to a few trusted aides, his voice low but seething with frustration. "They've targeted our logistics, our shipbuilding, even our fuel. They want to grind us down before we can even mobilise. Cowards."
But little was he aware that, at that very hour, across the frozen waters of Sakhalin, a more dangerous threat stirred.
In the biting cold forests and abandoned outposts of the island, the remnants of Russian forces, once thought scattered and broken, had regathered their strength. Now, alongside the Japanese Northern Army's 2nd Division and the battle-hardened 11th Brigade, they were preparing for something far more ambitious: a full-scale assault across the southern straits.
The very borders of the empire he so proudly represented were beginning to crack under the growing pressure.
At that exact moment, the tall gilded doors of the Gadetian Castle's Ballet Dancing Court parted with a ceremonial flourish.
Prince Gourmet entered.
He was draped in a rich navy coat, accented with silver threading that curled in elegant patterns along the lapels and cuffs, the fabric stiff with ornate embroidery. A velvet sash of red cut across his chest, while polished boots echoed against the floor. At his hip hung a ceremonial sabre with a jewelled hilt, less a weapon and more a symbol of his station. His dark hair was pulled back, lightly oiled and styled to perfection, and a faint smirk rested on his lips as if he had already read every thought in the room.
A sudden round of applause rose throughout the court, rippling through the gathered guests. Many of the women turned with lifted brows and fluttering fans, eyes widening slightly at the prince's entrance. Gourmet's posture straightened even more, his chin tipping upward by just a degree. The applause fed him, just enough to stoke the fire of his ego.
Surveying the Ballet Dancing Court inside Gadetian Castle, he saw it shimmer under the soft glow of dozens of golden chandeliers. High vaulted ceilings, adorned with intricate crown mouldings and heavy oak beams, loomed overhead. The walls were panelled with dark, polished wood and decorated with oil paintings of generals and noblemen, each framed in heavy gilded frames. Iron wall sconces flickered with candlelight, casting faint light across the vast stone floor, worn by decades of dancing.
