Daniel dropped a bomb revealing this to me. I thought werewolves were either in human form or wolf form. No one had ever bothered mentioning to me about another alternate form, a half-human/half-wolf being.
I replayed in my head Daniel's process of transforming into a wolf. It always occurred in the blink of an eye, and the next thing I knew, a large wolf stood in his place. I reviewed his transformation again, trying to slow the process in my mind, and I vaguely caught a flash of what resembled a frightening beast just before his body converted into a four-legged animal. I gritted my teeth and sighed.
"So, when were you planning on telling me about this? And showing me this side of yourself?" I gruffly asked.
I felt hurt because no one told me about this. I looked at the rest of The Liaison members. They shrugged their shoulders as if this new information for me shouldn't be a big deal. Dom scratched his head and awkwardly kicked a stone.
Daniel explained, "As I said, we rarely take that shape. A lot of werewolves find it difficult to stay in beast form. Much easier to turn into an actual wolf. During part of a normal transformation, we can make the decision to pause it mid-way through, before turning into a wolf. At that point, we'll be in the shape of a true beast."
"I want you or someone to show me right now," I insisted. I, again, looked over at my team of humans and asked, "So, have any of you seen this alternate shape shifting?"
Eli admitted, "Um... Actually, no, we haven't. We're aware of their ability to take that shape, though."
Daniel always brought extra clothes along in case of any spur of the moment body changing, since that tended to destroy the clothes he currently wore. I said to Daniel, "You know, I think you owe me this. And I really don't care if you rip your clothes to shreds or not in the process."
I wasn't expecting both Daniel and Isaac to transform for me, but together they walked a few feet away and removed their shoes. Making sure they had my full attention, they looked at each other and nodded once. They proceeded to let their bodies ripple and reshape themselves. I swear they grew about six inches taller. Their shirts burst apart, but their pants only ripped slightly, although were still ruined. Powerful muscles expanded and dark furry hair appeared all over their bodies. Their heads resembled wolves, but were grotesque and savage with huge muzzles and sharp teeth. They had rigid, tall, pointy ears that twitched, trying to capture the sounds around them. Hands turned into large, deadly claws. I remembered Cassius turned his hands into claws when he and Daniel had fought. Their feet seemed to be a mixture of human and wolf, but they could walk up right and stood towering over my height.
Needless to say, I was shocked. I kept telling myself not to be scared, they wouldn't hurt me. Eli, Dom, Zac and Tessa gawked at Daniel and Isaac, thrilled for the opportunity to see this phenomenon. At least they were already aware of this side to the werewolves, so they weren't quite as freaked out as myself. I thought to test my mental connection with Daniel.
Daniel, can you still hear me in this shape?
He immediately answered, Yes, I can hear you. And, I doubt you think I'm a cute wolf right now, huh? Don't be scared. I know I look like a monster, but this change was completely voluntary with no underlying aggression. I'm in control.
He stepped closer and reached to caress my face, ever so carefully, as he had razor sharp fingernails that could slice through my skin. When Daniel touched me, I sensed that everyone held their breath and I heard a few gasps. My peripheral vision caught Dominic moving towards us. He feared for my safety. I quickly sent Dom a mental message indicating everything was fine.
