Championship
“Whoo!” I scream, running into the center of the court as the ball hit the ground on the other side of the court.
“Yes!” Jill exclaims and joins me.
Our team does a quick cheer then gets back to doing what we do best.
Volleyball.
Oh, and winning.
The new kid, Katie went to the end line to serve. She was young, blonde, and one of those girls who would irritate me normally, but she’s good at volleyball.
I watch the ball fly over the net and the other team pass, set and hit the ball over to us. Lex passed the ball to Jill who made the split second decision to set the ball in my direction. I do my approach and slam the ball in front of the libero’s nose. She looks shocked as we go to cheer.
One more point and the title was ours.
I take a quick second to glance into the crowd and see Dan standing and looking as anxious as possible. We had been secretly dating for a couple days now. Both of us thought it would be a good idea to wait out telling Phil, as we didn’t really know how he would react. It felt great to finally be loved again.
I snap my attention back to my surroundings just as the libero managed to pass the ball over the net. Lex moved to back up Katie as she passed the ball to Jill.
“Out! Out!” I screamed.
Jill heard and set the ball in my direction. I did my approach and slammed the ball down on the other side. One of Manchester’s back row players managed to dig it up and get it to the setter.
Their setter jumped up and tipped it over, right to where I was.
I bumped the ball to Jill who set it low to Cayla. Cayla did one of her tricks, managing to tip the ball of the blocker’s hands and get the point.
The game winning point.
I stood there, not knowing what to do with myself.
We had won.
I snapped out of my trance and ran over to the rest of my team. The crowd was going crazy, but nearly as insane as the rest of my team.
And then all of a sudden, something dropped in my stomach. My entire body went numb and everything around me was going in slow motion. Déjà vu sunk in as I flashed back to two years before.
Caspar.
Everywhere I looked, his eyes were staring at me; I couldn’t escape them. My heart slowed its beating and my stomach churned. I sank to my knees as I recalled every detail I had tried so hard to forget these few years.
Jill was patting me on the back excitedly. I realized she couldn’t see how distraught I was.
My throat started to close and I can’t find the time to start to breathe, my mind is so overrun by flashbacks.
The excitement of the win.
The football field.
The lights.
The gun.
Caspar.
My screams.
The gunshots.
Terror.
Panic.
The emotions all flooded over me in such a huge wave, that I couldn’t handle it. My vision began to blur as I felt tears run down my face.
