Dan’s POV:

“Phil, something is seriously wrong…” I say for probably the third time in five minutes.

I clenched my phone in my hand, the screen reading the last message I had gotten from Sam. That was fourteen hours ago. And as many times as I had called and texted her, she had yet to respond. This wasn’t like her at all. If anything, Sam would have stayed up all night back home and waited for my call. I knew her that well. I was getting scared now.

“You need to relax, Dan” Phil tries to calm me.

He’s lying on the hotel bed, trying to watch some American sitcom, while I’m pacing back and forth, glued to my phone.

“I bet she just fell asleep or maybe she’s with Angela and just forgot her phone! There are a number of possibilities that could be happening!” he says.

I refused to calm my racing mind, thinking of all the worst possible things that could be happening.

The house could’ve exploded because of a gas leak…she could’ve gone for coffee and gotten mugged…Sam might’ve even burned the house down trying to make Phil’s cinnamon pancakes…She possibly could have gotten abducted by freaking llama aliens who want to use her in their experiments to make a super human race that will eventually kill us all and take over the planet! Okay so the last one was a stretch, but still. I continue pacing, walking in front of the television every few seconds.

Phil kept trying to crane his neck around me to see the show, but in vain. He sighs, giving up, and watches me pace for a moment longer.

“Look, if you really want to know what’s going on, just call Joe or even Ang and…ask them to go check up on her or something…” Phil says.

A light bulb goes off in my brain and I begin scrolling through my contacts, reaching Angela first.

“You are a genius Philip!” I say as I bring the phone up to my ear. The line rings for what seems like ages until, finally, someone picks up the line.

“H-Hello?” someone answers groggily.

“Hey!” I reply. “Hey! Sorry to wake you… Ang...Angela, you there?” I wait another minute.

“Mmhmm…” she says.

“Okay, listen!” I begin. “I’ve been trying to get a hold of Sam, and she’s not answering me, like at all. And I know this sounds strange, but I’m worried about her…” I hesitate before asking the next part. And I’m pretty sure Ang is asleep again.

“I was wondering if you could check up on her?” I wait for a response and get nothing.

“Like, I know you have a spare key to the apartment, do you think you could just stop by or something?” I wait again. Still silence on the other line. I’m getting impatient at this point.

“ANG!” I yell into my phone, startling Phil.

“Sorry! Sorry! I’m awake now! Sorry! And…sure I’ll go check on her soon. Just give me a minute to get dressed! I’ll call you when I get there!” she says. I breathe out heavily, finally relieved. “

Thank you so much! I totally owe you Ang!” I cry.

“Yeah, yeah, we’ve already been over this, okay? Bye!” she says before hanging up the phone. I click my phone off and sit down for the first time since I arrived at the hotel.

“And now we wait…” I say, less enthusiastic than before.

I try to distract myself with the sitcom, but it bores me. I can’t help but check my phone every few moments, making sure I didn’t miss anything. An excruciatingly long hour passed before my phone rang. I answer it within the second.

“Hello?” I almost scream into the phone. I jump up and begin to pace.

“Yeah, hey Dan…are you sure Sam didn’t tell you if she was like, I don’t know, going somewhere for the weekend or what have you?” she asks confused.

I shake my head, then realizing she couldn’t see me say “No…wait why?” I ask worriedly.

Angela hesitates.

“Angela, tell me now!” I demand scared sick. She’s silent again.

“Dan…” she begins as I wait.

“Sam’s not here. I don’t know what to do. She’s not answering my calls or texts either. Something’s wrong, you were right.” She falls silent again. I feel myself go numb.

There’s no way this is happening.

My entire world just fell apart. And there’s nothing I could do with an ocean between us.

“Ang…” I barely whisper.

“Don’t worry Dan...I’m- I’m going get the police. We’ll find her” I can hear her how scared she is.

“Thanks.” My voice cracks as I hang up the phone and fall onto the bed.

“Dan” I barely hear Phil say. “What’s going on?” he asks, worried. I can’t look at him. I stare at the ceiling

“She’s missing” I whisper.

Phil falls silent. We let the noise of the television surround us.

I feel nothing.

Sam…please be safe… I pray to myself, hoping she’s listening.
