My mind finally starts working when I find myself in front of a white door clearly labeled 37C.
I attempt to steady my breathing.
Dan.
Dan was hopefully in that room right now.
Dan was the one person I needed to talk to right now. I needed to ask-no, beg him for something right now.
It reminded me all too well of a similar situation only a few years back.
*flashback*
I took the steps two at a time up to the red door and rang the bell.
It was really cold out for March and I pulled my black jacket closer to my shoulders. I stood for a little while where I was, waiting for the person to open the door.
I waited just another moment before deciding to ring the bell again. I swear I could hear voices inside.
Why isn’t he answering?. I kept thinking to myself.
All of a sudden, I’m standing in the presence of a blond god. Maybe my eyes weren’t used to the lighting behind him as it was getting darker outside, but the boys looked as though he was angelic. He grinned like a devil and leaned against the door frame.
“Can I help you miss?” he asks innocently with an accent that I couldn’t place on my mental map.
My eyebrows furrow in confusion. This was not my high school friend Jack, nor a member of his family, nor anyone I knew.
“I’m sorry who are you?” I ask, not meaning to sound it, but definitely coming off as rude.
“I’m pretty sure you’re the one on my doorstep, babe” he replies, raising an eyebrow.
His eyes were quite blue I noticed.
I quickly check the surrounding neighborhood. Although I was certain I had the right house, as I had been here close to everyday of high school before now. I shake my head, confused.
“Wait-is Jack or Finn here?” I ask, trying to get my bearings.
Now its his turn to crinkle his eyebrows at me. I thought I could see a smirk behind his acting face.
“Caspar- knock it off already! Sam, you can just ignore him!” I hear Jack yell from the hallway.
Then his face is in my sight, over the shoulder of the boy named Caspar, and I smile at his grin.
“Come on dude, why can’t I have just a little bit of fun?” Caspar complains.
Backing away from the door, he gestures his hands as if signaling me to enter the house. I decide to ignore the strange boy with the foreign accent and follow my friend into his kitchen.
“Hey Finn!” I say to the boy sitting at the breakfast bar, eating a bowl of cereal although it was close to 8 at night. He waves back and turns back to texting whatever new girl he was aiming to pick up this week.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved Finn like a brother, but he was a bit of a playboy. I turn my attention back to Jack, kind of afraid of what I’m about to ask of him.
“So who are you?” I hear Caspar ask, behind me. I close my eyes in frustration and turn to face him.
“I am Sam Campbell, volleyball playing, dragon-slaying, flying witch of Narnia. Who the hell are you?” I say frustrated at how obvious it was I didn’t want to speak to him at the moment.
He looks defeated for a moment. And I soon felt bad. He was just trying to be nice after all and here I was being a complete bitch.
“Sorry” I say guiltily to him. “I’m just a bit frustrated at the moment.” I explain, trying to look guilty while tucking a piece of blonde hair behind my ear. He nods in understanding.
