Chapter 6 WAR
War, what is it good for?
Killing good family men, sons,
husbands, horses.
War it is a horrible thought, something we are now faced with this first day of battle. Yes we knew they were out there at sea, that they had ten ships loaded with men, if you want to call them that! They were only here to pilfer our coast for our food stocks, for our women, and for whatever else they could steal and take back with the. Our job was to stop them from doing it, keep them off our land, kill them if we had to, drive them back, or sink their ships if we could. They were like rats, if two of them got loose, you ended up with thousands of them vile creatures.
I rest comfortably in my tent, they have no need for me at this time in the first days of the battle. This is the time the men fight it out and show their worth, I on the other hand being just a wench as I hear them call me, just stay in my tent with my handmaiden and wait. Sir Androw is in with the commander in the planning tent working out strategies for the war. They are succeeding in keeping the invading army from the shore this first day, but the day is long, but the day has a night! The night I fly, I will spy on the enemy to see what they are doing, find any weaknesses in their ships or strategies, and just see if they are trying to sneak in at night.
We take flight while everyone sleeps, the centuries keep post, high we sore so as not to be seen. One circle of the shoreline then out to the ships. I count “one two three, four five six seven eight, nine..... wait there is one missing Where did it go?” I wonder Androw hears me think. Higher up I climb for a better view further out up the shore then down the shore. “There they are unloading into smaller boats to land. They are planning on a sneak attack we must warn the troops then plan for this attack.” Androw informs me. “I ask should we strike and take out this one ship?” Androw says no it will spoil the surprise attack. “OK” we head back.
So upon landing Sir Androw headed back to wake the commanders and advise them of the coming attack from the south. One ship had sailed south and was in the process of unloading as we speak and would be here by the morning attack. He says. “We spotted them while we were on our nightly watch and there were only nine ships in the seas out beyond so we searched and found them. The rest were of no threat tonight they seamed to be sleeping resting up for this day battle.”
Before I headed in to my tent after Androw removed the saddle and walked off, I strolled off into the woods behind my tent and got two rabbits then headed back in. Dropping them at the back flap of the tent I went in to get dressed then reached out to pick up the two rabbits to bring them in to cook. I am always so hungry after we fly for the night, Violet my handmaiden helps me clean them and we cook up a nice rabbit stew, it is so good to have fresh meat, so after we eat we lay down and I tell her what we saw and she is scared but I tell her “I will never let anything happen to her for she serves Kar and she protects the innocent.” We both laugh at that and then fall asleep, rest is needed for the big day ahead.
