Insecure

Chapter 5

"I can't believe he wants to hang out with us tonight," Lilly said, putting her hand over her heart like she was having a heart attack.

 "Lilly, calm down. Your boyfriend is coming over too, so don't get any ideas."

 "Please, Laura. I wouldn't go after my best friend's man."

 "He's not my man," Laura said, rolling her eyes as Lilly unlocked the door.

 "He's so into you, though."

 "Doubt it."

 They sat down in the living room, and as soon as they did, Lilly's boyfriend walked in. "Hey hey," he said, sitting next to Lilly.

 "Hey Carlos," she said, kissing his cheek. Carlos was tan, 6'1, had short black hair, strong fit figure, blue eyes and often wore shorts and a tank top with a jacket over it.

 "Hey, what's up?"

 "Obviously just got home. How did you get here so fast?"

 "Oh, turns out my mom didn't need me home after all."

 Lilly shook her head, smiling. "Laura, are you alright?"

 "Yes," she said, looking down at her pocket. "I need some air, I'll be back," Laura added, heading out the back door.

Meanwhile, Jayce was in the car with his mom, driving to Laura's house, and his mom was pestering him with questions. "Wow, you made a friend already today?" Jayce's mom asked him, shocked.

 "Well, I had a few girls and guys talk to me, but there's two girls that stood out to me."

 "Is this why I'm driving you here? For a girl?"

 "I'm sorry. This is temporary until my car gets fixed."

 "Don't apologize. I understand, just don't get into too much trouble."

 "Don't worry, mom. We're just hanging out. There's no drinking or drugs. She's not like that."

 "That's funny. That's what I said to my parents when later on, I got pregnant. What's this girl's name?"

 "Her name is Laura, and I swear nothing like that is going to happen."

 "Wait. Is her last name Collins?"

 "Um...Yeah, how did you know?"

 "Nothing, is that her over there?" Mrs. Jackson asked as they pulled up to Lilly's house.

 "Oh yeah...Wait..." Jayce looked closer, and he saw her with a bottle of pills, a knife and a rope that she was tying on Lilly's roof. "Oh my God!" Jayce opened the door and sprinted to Laura. He ran to her and grabbed her into his arms which made her yelp and drop everything.

Laura tied a rope to the top of Lilly's roof, and she grabbed her pills about to take one. She looked behind her, and she didn't see anyone, but then all of a sudden, she felt someone grab her and take her gently to the ground.

 "What are you doing?" Laura demanded until she turned around to see Jayce. "Jayce?"

 "What the hell are you doing?" he demanded. She saw anger in his eyes, his beautiful eyes.

"Um," Laura stuttered, looking down at the pills that were all over the ground.

"Please tell me you weren't trying to commit suicide," he said, looking into Laura's eyes.

"I can't tell you that," Laura said, looking away from him.

 Jayce sighed and stood up while pulling Laura up with him. "Laura, why would you do such a thing to yourself? You're way too beautiful to leave m-m....I mean, your best friend."

 "Jayce, I've been through a lot. You don't understand...."

 "Then, help me understand. Just please don't do this," he said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

 She bit her lip and looked down at the ground. "I'm sorry. I just don't know..." Before she could finish, Lilly walked out.

 "Oh hey. I'm sorry if I interrupted something. I just wanted to see what was taking Laura so long."

 "Do you want to tell her?" Jayce said, looking down at Laura.

 She shook her head, ashamed. "What happened?" Lilly asked.

 "Look at your roof and the pills on the ground."

 It took Lilly a second to grasp all this information from the scene, then she got it.
Lilly gasped and hugged Laura. "Oh my God, Laura. What the hell were you thinking? You can't leave me. We're best friends! I let you into my home. I care about you! How could you even think about doing this?"

 Laura pulled away and shook her head. "You know what I've been through."

 "Yes Laura, I also know that I've been there for you."

 Laura shook her head. "Jayce shouldn't have stopped me."

 Out of the blue, Jayce grabbed her hand and pulled her to him. "Jayce..." she couldn't finish. He was already kissing her. It surprised him and herself that she was kissing back, but she was. They finally pulled away, and Jayce said,"I care. Please don't do this to me or your best friend."
Laura shook her head and pulled away from him. "Thanks for coming," she said, shaking her head and running inside.

 Lilly turned to Jayce. "Hmm... Did you want to come in and talk with her or..."

 "No. She needs time alone, just do me favor."

 "Yes, of course."

 "Make sure you watch her and make sure she doesn't get hurt."

 "Definitely, I will. If you change your mind..."

 "Babe, who is this?" Carlos asked, opening the door.

 "Carlos, this is..."

 "Hey, I'm Jayce. I'm new around here, and I was coming over to hang out with Laura, but she has a change of plans. Don't worry about me. I'm just going to come back when Laura is feeling better," Jayce said, sticking his hand out in front of him towards Carlos.

 Carlos nodded with a sigh of relief as he shook his hand. "I'm Carlos, Lilly's boyfriend. Hey, if you're new around here, how about you come in? Laura probably isn't in the mood to talk, but we could hang and play video games or whatever."

 "Are you cheating on me?" Lilly joked, looking at her boyfriend.

 Jayce chuckled and shrugged. "I guess I could for a little bit. My mom already left, so sure I'll join."

 They all walked inside, and Jayce looked over to see Laura sitting on the window sill and saying,
"Mom, why did you go? Why did you leave me alone?"

 Jayce looked at Lilly, and she just nodded, walking over to Laura. "Laura, Jayce decided to come in. I know things are awkward, but he's hanging out with Carlos. If you want to talk with him, he'll gladly talk to you alone."

 "Did he hear me say anything towards the window?" She whispered.

 "Yeah, I'm sorry."

 Laura nodded and turned to Jayce. Jayce gave her a small smile which made her smile a bit and blush. "I guess we can talk upstairs," she said, walking upstairs without looking to see if he was following.

 "Hey, don't try anything," Lilly said, laughing as he shook his head and headed upstairs.

 "You sound like my mother."
