If a tree fell in the woods and no one was around to hear it, it was because the tree was attempting to get away from Desmond and Sebastian's endless arguing.

This half-baked idea was instantly regretted as soon as it was acted upon by both parties, but there was no turning back. They could both be arrested by the Ministry of Magic now for their crimes. However, that fact had been true for some time. They each had been lucky in avoiding the possibility until this point.

In a strange way, Sebastian had technically succeeded where all of the other Aurors had failed. Not only had he found their wanted wizard, but he was able to finally ask all of the questions that he'd been dying to have answers to. Dozens of people had been working to achieve this for months, over a year, in some cases. He had been the only one to succeed completely. This would have brought him an ego-boasting pride if it had not been for the fact that getting answers was more torturous than expected.

"When exactly had you realized you were an amplifier?"

"Instantly," Desmond said flatly as they walked. The destination was weeks away. It felt twice as long with each step. "But, that's because Marceline admitted it before it happened."

Lucky bastard. Sebastian thought bitterly to himself. She never told me anything. "Did you feel the difference? Did it hurt?"

"Not at first. Everything was numb. I think I was in shock."

"Have you noticed any different effects when casting spells?"

"No," He answered off with a way of the hand, "It's all the same."

"Are you sure?"

The doubt crawled under Desmond's skin. The next answer was sharper, "I'm sure."

"It's a lot of magic."

"I'm aware."

"I'm just saying, no effect is odd given the circumstances," Sebastian pointed out. There was no air between words. One disagreement seemed to naturally roll into the next like a landslide. "What about creating your animagus?"

"It seemed normal. Nothing different from what I read."

"Did you keep any notes?"

"No."

"Why not?" There was a clear annoyance in his tone. Like it was something that Sebastian specifically felt entitled to have, and he had felt that way.

Desmond's face twisted. "I was a bit busy, Sallow," He scoffed over his shoulder. "I didn't have the time to be taking notes."

That was a complete and utter lie.

But explaining that he had been working on a ship and his journal went overboard halfway through the process was too embarrassing to admit. It was going to be weeks before they would dock again, and he could get a replacement. He would have yelled at himself for the mistake if it had not been for the mandrake leaf rotting in his mouth.

Each step toward Berlin felt unnecessary. If Desmond had been alone, he could have flown there in half the time. That was the point of dealing with the mandrake leaf after all. But then he had to turn around because someone decided it would be beneficial to create another amplifier, after he went through the trouble of destroying one. If he had ignored it and Sebastian Sallow, then Berlin's amplifier would have been gone by now.
