The air filled with smoke as the fire began to spread throughout the small apartment building. I started coughing loudly as smoke started to fill my lungs. I didn't expect Joker to actually light the building on fire but I guess you can never underestimate him. He said that the best way to get Batman to take me in was to have me tragically loose my "parents". I hated his plan because he was using a real couple to stage my parents death. I was sorta hoping he and Harley would pretend to be my parents and die, but I knew it was unlikely.
Harley was outside throwing balls of fire and bombs at the building trying to get Batman's attention. "Here he comes!" Joker said excitedly through the ear piece. I knew that was my cue so I started yelling for help and calling for my parents. "Mom! Dad! Anyone?" I screamed through the thick layers of smoke occasionally coughing, hoping Batman would hear me and come so I wouldn't have to go through this much longer.
Just as I spotted my "parents" across the room, a large piece of the roof collapsed, farther separating me from them. "Help!" I screamed.
I tried getting past the fallen ceiling but tripped and fell on my face. Looking up I saw a small space I could climb through to get to the couple. I quickly slid through the opening and got back to my feet.
"He's on the floor above you. Try and get his attention." Harley screamed in my ear. I cleared my throat and screamed as loud as I could for help. Behind me I heard someone trying to get the apartment door open and I knew I had got my victims attention.
Just then a large ceiling beam fell from above, sending me to the floor beneath it. I screamed out in pain feeling the fire burn through my clothes and heat my skin slowly melting it. That was not supposed to happen, I thought. I heard the door burst open and someone run in. There was one problem though, my "parents" weren't dead yet.
"Harley I need you to throw a bomb at the south wall on my floor." It pained me to say but I couldn't see anyone else die just because I messed up on this.
Seconds after I said that the wall behind the couple exploded and fell on them. "Mom! Dad! No!" I screamed out in pain. My eyes filled with tears as I saw them laying there not moving. I just killed a poor defenseless couple who did nothing to deserve that. Seeing that made me more eager to go on with the plan because I couldn't bare putting anyone else in danger.
I screamed again as the beam melted my back, tears falling from my face. The pain was unbearable but soon I felt the beam being lifted off my back. I hurriedly crawled from under the beam each movement making a wave of pain go through my body. I was sure I would have scars after this.
Strong arms wrapped around me as I was lifted and carried out the burning building. I was placed on the roof of a building across from my "home". Tears started to stream down my face again but this time they were fake. I scurried to the edged of the roof tripping and falling against the short wall. "Mom, Dad." I whispered.
"Are you ok?" A deep, raspy voice called from behind me. I faintly smiled. At least I got his attention. He came up behind me and put his hand on my shoulder causing me to wince."I'm sorry." He said probably referring to both the touch and my "parents".
Before I could respond a huge explosion came from the building making the whole thing collapse to the ground. Once again I choked on fake tears looking at the now destroyed building. I slowly stood up and turned to face The Dark Knight trying to choke back more tears.
"I'm really good at this.." I thought as I looked up at tall dark figure. He was taller and more built than I imagined. He looked down at me eyes filled with compassion and sorrow for me. He didn't look mean or scary. If anything he looked sad.
I whipped some tears from my face and coughed again before saying, "Thank you." That made me happy. I was actually talking to a real person! I coughed again trying to cover the joy.
I let another tear fall," What do I do now? They were my only family." I said wincing at attempting to move my shoulder. "Turn around" He instructed. I carefully turned around letting him inspect my wounds. At least these new wounds would cover up the previous ones from the Joker.
"The burns aren't that bad but you might have a few scars." He concluded. I sighed in relief.
"Are you going to take to an Orphanage? I-I don't have any other family to live with." I choke out after turning back around to face him.
"No you will come with me." He said. In my ear piece I could here Harley and Joker congratulating themselves and singing with joy. In my head I was rolling my eyes but smiling also. At least nobody was gonna die today.
