"I MADE BREAKFAST for you, little queen. I woke up early this morning to cook..."
The star-patterned tablecloth is dusted with flour, and a glass plate sits in the center along with a cup of milk. He sits on a ridiculously small wooden stool for his size, and I do the same on the other side. He removes the cloth covering the breakfast and reveals a mountain of shortcrust pastry tarts filled with creamy chocolate. They look homemade; the pastry strips are not precise, some had to be overlapped to patch the missing spaces, but they look great.
"Did you make these for me?" I ask with a flattered smile.
"I don't have much to offer you... as you can see, I'm poor and live a life on the edge of humility. As long as you want to sleep with me, I'll cook for you every day. My goddess is precious, and I want to take care of her." He looks at his palms, which he hates so much. "I learned to cook despite these calloused hands and..." he stops. "I couldn't always eat the Fairies' frogs. Well, not all bad things come to harm: a few years ago, I discovered that I like being a cook."
I kiss the back of his hand. "You are sweetness personified."
He smiles shyly. "A man who cooks is convenient, huh?" He hands me the cup of milk and puts a tart on the plate. "Did you know I can also sew clothes?"
I widen my eyes, immediately taking a bite.
"Blame the Fairies," he continues. "Them and those diabolical books on fabrics and sewing... but they came in handy. If the tart is disgusting, tell me... I'll make you something else."
