After I pulled off from Ruby Tuesdays I went home. I was still pissed about their surprise lunch. I walked in the house Amber was sitting in the middle of the floor crying
Dj: Whats wrong
Amber: I can't fix this
She held up pieces of a remote
Dj: Ok we'll just get another one
I helped her off the floor. She wiped her face
Amber: Sorry my hormones are way off today
Dj: Its cool
I heard Lexi pull into the driveway and drop my mama, aunt and uncle off. I was walkin upstairs when they came in.
Janet: Dj come here
I sighed and turned around
Dj: What ma
Robert: Don't talk to your mother like that
Lisa: Robert he's been holding on to something let him get it out
Amber: I think that it's just best we leave well enough alone
If looks could kill my mama stared Amber down
Janet: Come in the kitchen while I cook something
She directed her attention back to me then walked towards the kitchen. Amber went upstairs and unc and auntie sat down in the living room and turned on the tv. I came in the kitchen and sat down at the table
Janet: I want you to listen
Dj: Ma I told...
She slammed one of the pots down on the counter
Janet: Boy if you don't shut yo ungrateful black ass up you'll leave before I do
I sat and took a deep breath
Janet: All I wanna see before I leave this earth is my babies happy
She started cuttin up vegetables
Dj: I feel like a child
Janet: You been actin like one so if the shoe fit wear Dre. You walkin around here poutin like Lexi owe yo ass something and she don't.
Dj: Man are you done
She pointed the knife at me
Janet: I'm still yo mama boy keep talkin to me like that, I pushed yo big headed ass in this world I will take you out
She went back to preparin dinner. Amber walked in
Amber: Sorry for interrupting
Janet: Anyway my dying wish is for y'all to squash this bullshit Dj she's tried now it's all on you... you're the one hurting her not him and you're tearing y'all relationship apart not her get it together.
I sat and thought about it. I don't feel like I overreacted... maybe a little. She finished seasoning the meat and put it in some aluminium foil.
Janet: Dj
I stood up bout to walk out the kitchen. Amber sat down at the table.
Dj: Yea ma
Janet: Lexi is all you have left I want you to let that sink in
She opened the oven and I turned around to walk away. I heard a thump. Amber jumped up
Amber: Oh my God
I turned around and rushed to my mama who had fallen over
Lisa: Call an ambulance Robert
She came in the kitchen with a towel. She lifted her head up and put it under
Robert: Is she breathing
He walked in and stood over us. I put my finger under her nose
Dj: Yea she is
Robert: Ok thank you
He hung up
Robert: They should be here in a minute
Amber: Ill open the door
Lisa: Get my sweater Robert and hers too
Robert: Ima get ya shoes too
He left out. My aunt looked at me then used her thumb to wipe away the tears from under my eyes.
Lisa: She gonna be fine no matter what happens... are you baby?
I looked up at her those words, for some reason, hit home. My unc came in and the paramedics followed him
Robert: Come on baby
He grabbed my aunts arm and pulled her up. Amber rested her hand on my shoulder. I got up and out of the paramedics way. They strapped a oxygen mask to her and put a brace on her neck. Two more paramedics brought in a board to put her on the gurney. They rolled her out into the back of the ambulance.
Paramedic: Whats her name
Dj: Janet Wilson
Amber: Here's all of her information
She handed them some papers and he looked over them
Paramedics: Lets get Ms. Janet here to the hospital
Lisa: Is she gonna be ok
Paramedic: You'll have to go to Emory
Dj: Come on auntie I'll drive us there
We all got in my truck and went to the hospital.
Amber: I need a bathroom
Robert: Ima go find what room she's in help Lisa sit down
He went to the front desk and we walked over to the waiting room. Robert: They said they'll let us kno let me call Lexi
Lexi: Hello
Robert: Lexi you need to get to the hospital
Amber came and sat down.
Lisa: I need to kno where my sister is
She started cryin
Robert: Your mom baby she's in the hospital... Emory
They hung up and my aunt baracaded her face in unc neck
Robert: Lexi on her way
Dr. Stevens: Dj
I stood up
Dj: Was up doc
Dr. Stevens: She slipped into a deep sleep and...
He explained what was going on and told us we could see her and say our goodbyes.
Robert: Go and we'll come after you
I followed Dr. Stevens to her room. She looked peaceful laying there like she was worry free.
Dr. Stevens: Ill be back to check on her soon
He left out and I pulled up a chair next to her. I wiped my face and thought about all she said in the kitchen
Dj: Ima make it right
One of my tears fell and hit her hand. I heard Lexi come in
Lexi: Dj
I looked up she looked like she had been cryin. I got up and walked over to her. What better time than now to get my little brat back. I stood over her for a good two minutes then wrapped my arms around her.
Dj: I'm sorry Lexi
I tried to hold back my tears. I realize how foolish I had been.
Lexi: I'm sorry too Dj
I let her go then walked back by mama bedside
Dj: With all the bullshit thats goin on first mama then Amber I..
Lexi sat on the other side of her
Lexi: I never meant to hurt you Dj... I just really love August...
Dj: I kno Lex
My mom cleared her throat
Janet: Aside from it being my dying wish for y'all asses to stop arguing
She kinda laughed
Dj: You want somethin.. water, ice
Lexi: A nurse or a doctor
I stood up but she motioned for me to sit back down
Janet: Listen to me my babies in life things happen for a reason. Both of y'all have your own lives now.
She looked at Lexi
Janet: You and August are great together
She looked at me
Janet: And look what God did you got a kid on the way
I laughed but tears we're streaming down both our faces
Dj: I promise she'll get your middle name
Janet: Oh Elise is a beautiful name
We laughed
Janet: I just want y'all to except each other be happy for one another
I smiled, got up and hugged her and Lexi did too. She closes her eyes and Shorty after her monitors start goin off.
Lexi: Oh my God
Nurses came in the room
Nurse: I'm so sorry guys
They covered her with the sheet
Dj: Come on Lex
She had barried her face in my arm. We walked back out to tell them. My aunt broke down. She cried so hard. Lexi went over to August and Amber came to me.
Amber: I'm sorry Dj
Dj: Yea
She put her hand on my arm and from there we flowed into a hug. I laid my head on her shoulder and mourned the loss of my mother.
