Athena POV (After)

I got back into pack territory around 1am. I slipped into the pack house, being careful to be almost silent. Once inside I noticed the kitchen light was still on.

I walked toward it, only to see Onyx there. I turn back immediately but she stopped me. "Hey. Haven't seen you since after you ran out of the 'trial'." She made finger quotes. She smiled briefly but it vanished as soon as it appeared.

I bit my lip and stared out the window. "Yeah, I've been busy..."

"Hm." Her fingers tapped on the table. Whenever Onyx does that it means she to say something else.

I mumbled a 'Yep' and after a moment of silence Onyx shook her head.

"This is ridiculous."

My head snapped back to her. "What?"

"You're lying." She laughed but there was no humor in it. I opened my mouth to speak but she continued. "And I know that because you're my best friend. And why is that, Flash?"

I blinked, surprised at her sudden question and her referring to my old nickname.

I thought about this for a while, the only sounds the clock on the wall and Onyx's occasional sips. I finally answered. "I don't know."

"Yes you do." Onyx stated as if it was the simplest thing in the world. After a beat she asked her next question. "Do you know why I put up with you?"

My mouth opened and closed, and I tried to answer. "W- I..." my eyebrows furrowed. "No." I answered truthfully.

"Hm." Onyx finished the tea she was drinking and set it in the sink. She then walked past me and padded up the stairs.

What just happened...? I scratched my head in confusion before picking my bag up and trudging up the stairs.

Belle POV (Before)

I'm in the middle of my AP English class, one of the few classes I have with Farrah. She seems really distant, and I'm worried my words hit her harder than I originally thought.

She stares blankly at her book, not really in the class but miles away. The teacher- Mrs. Lee definitely notices but is nice, and doesn't call on her. Or maybe she just doesn't know her name yet.

Once English was dismissed we had lunch, and usually I'd walk to the cafeteria with Farrah, but I had to send the schedule for student council and the school calendar for this week. It took me only about 10 minutes and once I was done my only thoughts were on food.

I went to the cafeteria the lunch line basically deserted by the time I got there. "Miss Belle, how was your summer?" The lunch lady smiles at me swiping my lunch card.

"Great Mrs. Thompson. How was your family vacation to New York City?" We converse a little bit more, but I excuse myself after awhile since my stomach was making dying whale noises.

I practically collapse at my table, and immediately start munching on my sandwich.

"Belle you really shouldn't stuff your face. It isn't ladylike." My friend Sapphire chastises me.

I roll my eyes, swallowing before responding. "Missed you too. By the way how was London?"

"Absolutely divine!" She gushes in a posh accent. "They don't speak like that, though." I rose my eyebrow in a 'no really??' way.
