Randel pulled the car into the parking lot, and as soon as the vehicle was stationary, I got out, grabbing my bag from off the floor and huffing toward the school.

“Misha!” Randel called behind me. “Come on!”

I ignored him and marched inside, feeling the strange looks of the onlookers as I went along.

Randel was being such an imbecile. And I hated how he was treating me. Wasn’t it enough that we were possibly going to be married in the future? Wasn’t it enough for him that my parents thought him good enough out of all the male wolves in my pack to be my Mate for I hadn’t come up with one. He should at least be happy that I’d felt some sort of affection for him in the beginning.

I waltzed straight up to my locker and twisted the combination in violently, tugging it open and snatching my books off the shelves.

“Whoa tiger, who bit your butt?” an amused voice came from behind me.

I looked back at Tegan. “Randel didn’t bite me. He’s being a pain.”

She leaned against the locker beside mine. “Oh yeah? Like how?”

“He’s convinced that I don’t like him and he was getting all defensive when Liam looked at me in the café. Liam of all people? He’s a freaking Shadow!” I said, kicking the locker beneath mine.

I mentally apologized to whoever kid owned the locker for the dent in it.

“Well, you did say that you didn’t love-love him Misha. He kind of has a right to be pissed at another guy for looking at you; he’s still your boyfriend.

“Not for long!” I retorted, knowing she was right. “You’re a genius Tegan. It was so simple, why didn’t I see this before?”

“Um… how am I a genius?” she asked, nibbling nervously on a strand of her vibrant pink hair.

“All I have to do is break up with Randel,” I smiled to myself.

“WHAT?!” Tegan yelped. “I never said you had to break up with Randel!?”

“No, but you gave me the idea for it. I don’t love him and he’s still my boyfriend. So why don’t I just change that status?” I shrugged, pushing my books into my backpack.

“Misha, you can’t do that!” she hissed.

“You just watch me,” I smiled at her, walking quickly down the hall.

Tegan kept up.

“No, serious shit Misha, you can’t,” and I looked at her and realized that she was deadly serious about this.

“Why not?”  I frowned. “If I don’t love someone I shouldn’t be made to go out with him.”

“But that’s where you’re wrong Mish!” Tegan said, keeping up with me. “You can’t forget that you’re Alpha. And no offense, but you haven’t found your Mate yet or have been Claimed. Randel is who the council wants to lead the Leaf Pack if you neglect to find a Mate by your eighteenth birthday. If you break up with him, then you’re screwing the whole pack!”

I stopped walking.

“I never thought it through like that.” I said, my voice wobbling. “But I don’t want to marry anyone I don’t love.”

“As an Alpha, duty comes before love Misha,” Tegan said quietly.

She should be Alpha, not me! She was so smart!
