“You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for that.” I said to Liam as we walked across the parking lot together, hand in hand.

“For what, me to admit that I’m your Mate?” it was the first time he’d voiced it for the night, and it didn’t fail to make the butterflies erupt in my stomach.

“No, for you to shut up and kiss me.” I rolled my eyes.

He gave me a knowing smirk and pulled me to his side, kissing my forehead.

"Better?" he asked, grinning at me.

"Perfect..." I managed to utter as I looked up at him.

I was rather happy that we’d sorted out all of this between each other, and that he’d offered me a ride to the Line. I was rather fond of my boots and was glad when my bare feet were sheathed in comfort once again.

We walked to the car in blissful silence, Liam swinging his car keys and hugging me to his side, the crisp smell of the shirt he was wearing entwined with the smell of the Shadow wolf scent I had come to be so used to.

But as much as I was enjoying our moments together, neither of us said the obvious clause that was hanging in the air.

We shouldn’t be together.

We couldn’t be together.

But God knows we wanted to.

He was my Mate, and I was his, and I wasn’t going to waste the one month we had together worrying about the future. I decided I was going to spend the days we had together to the fullest, enjoying how he made me feel until I couldn’t feel such emotions anymore. Until I was officially Randel’s on my birthday.

That was, if he wanted to be with me.

I hoped with all my heart that he did, or all this… energy floating in between us would be for nothing.

Not to mention the questions we were evading.

But in such conscious happiness, no words being spoken was just fine with me.

I kept my mouth shut, willing to be quiet, if not only for this moment and enjoy it.

Liam opened the car door for me and I climbed in, immediately relaxing in the seat. He just gave me a smile and crossed the front of the car quickly, climbing into the driver’s seat and starting the engine.

He pulled out of the parking lot and held my hand across the seat.

I liked this.

I liked the energy that surged between our touch. I liked the way my skin got all tingly in places they’d never been before. I liked how my heart was steadily increasing its palpitations because of his touch. And I liked his Shadow scent that filled the car.

If someone had told me at the beginning of September when school began that Liam Lichenfield would become my Mate, and make me so in love with him that I refused to have anything to say about him being a Shadow, I would have laughed.

But I’d never had a moment that felt so right between us—or anyone else for that matter.

We drove in companionable silence, neither of us willing to break the spell that had settled upon us.

But when I saw the familiar horde of bushes that clustered before the mountain road, I knew the ride had come to an end.

But I didn’t want to leave him.
