Chapter 18;
Jess p.o.v.
We pulled up to my flat half an hour later, and were greeted by something I really didn't want to see - my ex boyfriend, Jack.
I could tell instantly he was drunk, as I had seen on several occasions. Eric obviously noticed, as he stepped in front of me, trying to hide me from Jack's view.
"Too late, babe!" he slurred "I've seen you!"
"Would you leave please? We don't want trouble." Eric tried to reason with him.
"You're that Sa-Sadface bloke, aint ya?" he drawled.
"Saade, actually. Now would yo-"
"Whatever." he hiccupped "You're only looking for a visa anyway! I bet you don't even like her!" he screamed between hiccups and burps.
It was my turn now. I moved forwards past Eric and nearer to Jack. "How dare you!" I screamed, feeling Eric's arm grabbing for mine. I turned and saw the pleading look on his face.
"Don't." he whispered, "He is not worth it." I managed to calm down, and took a deep breath.
"That's it, do what sadface says, like a good little pet." I heard Jack spit. He had broken up with me just over a year and a half ago, no explanation, but the next day I found him in bed with another girl.
I had slapped him and walked out - we have had very little contact since then, just the occasional "I still love you" text from him. I had received one about a month ago, which I had showed Eric then deleted - without replying.
"Saade. And yes, I will because I love him, not you." I could feel Eric tensing at my side, still not letting go of my arm. I smiled at him, but he looked too concerned and ready to fight to notice.
"You broke up with me, and we've been through this countless times - I don't want you anymore. Just go, before you embarrass yourself." I continued.
Jack gave me a look of anger, and before I knew it, he had lunged for me - to do what, I had no idea. I didn't get to find out though as Eric had stepped in front of me and blocked him.
Jack hesitated for a few seconds, before deciding to punch Eric instead. I heard him cry out in shock, and a nasty crack - I couldn't tell who it came from though.
"Hey, hey!" I heard a strange voice shout, pulling Jack away down the road, whilst he was still screaming profanities. It was one of my neighbours, I realised. A man of about 40, who lived upstairs. I mouthed a thank you to him and rushed to Eric.
"Ow." he groaned, sitting up and touching his cut cheek. "I will have bruise tomorrow." he sighed. I helped him up, and held his face in my hands as I looked at the damage.
"And a nice black eye, I think." I told him sadly, Kissing his eyelid gently. "Thank you.'
"For?" he asked, confused for some reason.
"For protecting me, of course. But he probably wouldn't have hurt me again." I told him, smiling hugely.
"Of course I would. I would do anything for you. Wait, again?" Oh crap, I hadn't realised what I said. He looked as if he had been punched in the gut. "He has before? When? Did you-"
"Shh! It's fine, really."
"No it isn't! He should never have-" he took a deep breath. "I swear it, if I see him again, I'll-"
"No you won't. Because you are so much better than he is. Promise me?"
"I-I- Ok, for you." he finally agreed, clearly not liking this. I didn't want him getting into trouble with the police over Jack.
"Thank you. Now, let's get some ice on that cheek, yeah?" he nodded and smiled, but winced when his already cut cheek started bleeding again.
"Come on, my brave man," I laughed. He picked up his bag from where it had fallen, slung it over his shoulder, and before I could object, grabbed my suitcase as well.
Ever the gentleman, I smiled to myself.
