"Everyone has to share a barrack. Of course, Your Majesty, you don't have to, we can-" A soldier, standing on a wooden box of rations spoke when Alberu's gentle smile disarmed him quietly. His voice faded out as Alberu's smile gently glowed like sunlight. He flushed as Alberu's hand rested on his shoulder.
"That is not necessary. I am not so privileged to not be able to share a barrack. We are at war. We are all soldiers. I will not let anyone sacrifice the little comfort you have for me." Alberu spoke firmly, his voice a comforting melody to the soldiers. The soldiers laughed awkwardly, nodding. The soldier bowed low.
"My a...apologies for presuming."
"It is quite alright. Now. We have to rest here tonight. There will be rations and provisions being delivered here soon, so please. All enjoy yourselves. I will take first shift once it arrives." Alberu dazzled as he spoke the buttery sugary words. Choi Han gave him a sidelong glance at his words.
The soldiers hesitated their cheering at the last sentence. He would? They hesitated, not because they thought badly of him, but because he was tired. He kept the helmet on his head, which was piteous, since they could tell it was because he was too tired to put it away. What if he fell asleep on patrol? They looked over to Choi Han, who looked at the king with an expression that alleviated their worries.
"Your Majesty, I insist on first shift." Choi Han spoke, his voice gentle as he spoke to his king, away from the microphone. He didn't want to embarass his king, but he didn't want him to stay up anymore. He had spent hours working in the office and hours out on the battlefield. Out of everyone, he's slept the least.
"No, it's fi-"
"Your Majesty. I will ensure your safety, I promise. You can sleep." Choi Han's fingers brushed against Alberu's finger tips as he turned to stand in front of him. He gently redirected him towards the barracks. The soldiers looked towards Choi Han and gave him an indecipherable look with a thumbs up. Alberu looked worried at it, his face grimacing under the helmet.
"Alright, Choi Han. I had paperwork to do anyways." Alberu allowed, his voice loud to send a message. Choi Han's hands touched him, with worry. His shoulders sagged slightly under Choi Han's careful grasp. As soon as it happened, he fixed his posture. He couldn't do that. He couldn't forget of his burdens — the kingdom's troubles. That was his job. Choi Han couldn't be a distraction for it.
"Your Majesty, with all the due respect you deserve, I suggested you sleep. And if you must force my hand like this, I will wait for you to sleep." Choi Han's voice was soft and gentle as they made their way to the barrack. Alberu stayed quiet as Choi Han opened the fabric curtains and gestured him in.
"It's our's." Choi Han spoke quietly and gently. That raised Alberu's eyebrow. He only just made the announcement, but it was a well accepted notion that he would have his own barrack. "I knew you were going to share, and I thought it would be better if you bunked with me." Choi Han shrugged, his movements awkward.
"You knew?" Alberu was relatively surprised, but his voice came out casual and controlled. Choi Han nodded.
"You're too selfless to take a barrack for yourself." Choi Han's voice was confident. As if he really believed what he said. Alberu sometimes forgot that his commander was a naive young man. It was hard to remember that with his expertise on the battlefield and his swordsmanship. He shook his head slightly.
