“I am your grandfather.”

That was it. The phrase that kept playing in Joanna’s head for the past fifteen hours. She couldn’t sleep last night after the emotional bomb that was thrown at her.

she was trying to wash the shock away by the rain of shower that splashed viciously over her.

“Hey kid, you alright?” tom the guard’s voice called her from outside the shower cube and she jolted out of her thoughts. She didn’t realize that she was in the shower for too long.

Switching the water off, she grabbed the small towel and started drying of herself. She looked at the spot below her right breast. The constant reminder of her dark past. She lightly touched the old burn scar before she rubbed the towel over it and scrubbed as if making sure to get it extra dry.

“it’s almost time!” Tom’s voice called again.

“I’m done, just putting on my clothes.” She called back, assuring the guy.

When she finished dressing she got out and started collecting the cleaning tools before she walked to where the guard was standing and placed them in front of him.

“I’m sorry, I think I lost track of time.” She apologized.

“Daydreaming, ha?” Tom said, smiling mockingly. Joanna chuckled to humor the guy. “Yeah, I guess.” She said before she left him and went back.

As she passed through the corridors leading to the main cells hall, Kevin suddenly appeared from one of the crossing corridors.

“H.. Hi.” She started and he looked at her intently for a few minutes.

“Come with me!” he ordered before he turned around and started walking away. And she followed closely.

“What’s up?” she said to his back. He didn’t respond and kept on walking. They reached one of the doors and he unlocked it and opened it wide gesturing for her to enter. She complied.

“So.. What’s up?” she repeated the question as he closed the door behind him.

“what’s going on with you, Cage?” he asked her calmly, leaning back at the closed door and folding his arms in front of him.

“I don’t know. What’s going on?” she said stupidly and noticed that he wasn’t that calm after all as one of his large veins popped on his forehead.

He walked slowly toward her and extended his hand to her face, lightly touching the bruis under her left eye. “what. Is. This?” he said every word separately.

“I fell down.” She said immediately knowing that he wouldn’t be that easily fooled.

“and this?” he said between his gritted teeth as he lifted her lift arm ub and rolled back her sleeve with his other hand, exposing a large blue bruise there.

“I guess I fall a lot.” She blurted out, nodding fleshly.

“Joan!” he bellowed. “what is going on?”

Joanna looked at him, seriously this time, and pulled her arm slowly from his grip. She took two steps back and lowered her eyes down at the level of his shoes.

“I got into a fight.”

“Fight?” he raised his eyebrows in question.

“m.. multiple fights.” She said cautiously as she looked up at him slowly. He was placing both hands on the sides of his hip. He shut his eyes and exhaled audibly.
