Chapter 5- Hey Bear...I mean There...

As Grant and I walk through the door to our house, we hear the banging of pots and pans and angry sighs. Then we see Mama Winters with smoke coming out of her nose and ears ready to charge at us. Nervous I give her a lopsided grin and say, "Hey Bear... I mean there. Hey there..."

"HEY THERE ALL I GET IS HEY THERE?! I SPEND HOURS WORRYING ABOUT YOU LIKE I DONT NEED THIS STRESS! YOU TWO ARE SO OBLIVIOUS TO HOW MUCH YOUR ACTIONS AFFECT ME! GRANT YOU HUNG UP ON ME DO YOU KNOW HOW DISRESPECTFUL THAT IS?! YOUR FATHER IS EVEN ANGRY AT YOU!"

But Day Day never gets mad I thought... Then he walks in with his lips in a thin line that says "if I'm not mad at you, your mother will make me sleep outside." My mom starts her rant again going on for about an hour on respect, disregarding the fact that I had a concussion. And then her anger is diverted to my poor father for not saying anything to reprimand us. As they continue to fight, Grant and I sprint upstairs running into the extra/ thoughts/miscellaneous room to talk. Although we aren't super close, Grant and I still talk about school and mean buttheads who deserve to die... Too violent? Anyways, we hear the yelling subside and a door slamming so we tip toe down the stairs and into the kitchen to get food because we are absolutely starving.

Let's see we have cold pizza, Mom's purple delight (ew heck no! anything with the word delight in it should trigger a Caution! sign), cupcakes for Mom's Book Club, or ice cream. With a devious smile, Grant retrieves the ice cream and hands me a spoon as we pig out on ice cream for our "dinner." Then from the doorway of the kitchen we hear coughing and we turn to see our mother. Grant's spoon drops and I grab the ice cream and drag him outside to the nearest park. Our mother stands in the doorway too tired to run after us, knowing she can find us because of that stupid Find My Iphone App.

Ice cream still smothered on our faces, Grant and I finally stop running as we reach a park. We haven't really explored the neighborhood since we moved here so this park was not a planned hiding spot.  Well that was eventful! We sit down on the bench and I see Grant pull a spoon out of his back pocket taking the ice cream from me as I catch my breath. I look around and see a few hobos on a couple other benches and then see a golden retriever bounding towards me. I pet the dog's head and look to see the tag when all of a sudden I hear a voice yelling, "First you run into me and now you're stealing my dog? Sage what kind of monster are you?" He laughs and I immediately recognize him and my breath hitches... It's Drew.

Grant runs off like a little mischievous elf leaving me with the person who will honestly be the bane of my existence. I turn to face him with a nervous grin gazing at his brown hair and dreamy.... Woah sorry I went into Sageville there...(Sageville is basically my imagination and daydreams all in one) Drew sits down on the bench next to me, looking into my eyes. He asks,"Sage... I saw how you hesitated when Aiden asked you why you moved here. I am not asking for an explanation and you don't need to tell me what happened, but I just want you to know that I'm here for you if you ever want to talk about anything."

I raise one eyebrow,"Anything?"

"Anything."he replies.

"Hmmm okay... So let's talk about tampon brands!"

"NOT WHAT I MEANT SAGE!"

I begin to laugh struggling to speak,"You should've seen your face!"

"Haha very funny! So what other things do you want to talk about other than feminine hygiene products and shit like that?"

"Hey! It's not shit! It helps a lot! You would know with your own manstrual periods!"

"Woah Okay Sage you win!!!"

"Haha YES SCORE ONE SAGE ZERO HORMONAL DREW! Okay I'll stop now haha what's your dog's name?"

"Her name is Serenity but her name does not suit her at all! She is nowhere near serene!"

"She's so cute I want to take her and hug her for a long time!"

"Oh so you do actually want to steal my dog!"

We laugh so hard and when we settle down our eyes meet and he inches toward me, brushing his hand across my cheek-- Then we hear Serenity bark breaking our moment as we awkwardly separate and watch Grant chasing after the dog who had somehow taken his ice cream!

I speak up, "Um I think I need to head home my mom was mad when I left so may as well get the lecture over with."

"Oh um yeah," he says, "I should be getting home too! It was nice talking to you!"

I give him an awkward hug and then Grant yells,"We live across the street from each other you bozo." 

"Oh shut up Grant isn't it past your bedtime?"

He sticks his tongue out at me and keeps running to try, in vain, to catch Serenity.  Drew and I stand there a while with nothing but awkward silence between us.  I wait to see if he will speak but he remains quiet, watching Serenity, so I clear my throat and ask if he wants to head home.  We retrieve Grant and Serenity and walk home again in silence, with nothing but the sound of our steps and our breathing.  

We finally reach our houses and Drew gives me a silent nod and walks away.  What just happened? I'm just so confused?! AHHH! I think to myself.   

Grant and I sneak inside to find Dad on the couch and the lights off, meaning that Mom was asleep to.  We creep up the stairs and into our rooms.  Before I go in the door, I wave Grant goodnight silently, but he does so and one of the floorboards creak.  With that we bolt inside our rooms and try to keep quiet. 

I look at all of the boxes still in my room unpacked, untouched, and gaining dust.  The walls are all blank just like my mind when I think about the events at the park.  So many things happened that I just couldn't contain so I grab my pillow and hug it really hard with a smile.  Because I don't want to wake up the Beast/ Mom, I decide to take a shower in the morning and just sink into the comfiness of my bed.  

Yet, I can't seem to fall asleep.  My brain is awake and full of emotion but my body is exhausted after having a tiny concussion.  However somehow I am able to drift off to sleep at 3:00 am.  We will see what tomorrow brings!! ;)
