Minji’s POV
Lately, I’ve been haunted by the same dream.
With a girl, her face blurred by the haze of sleep, keeps appearing. I don’t know who she is, yet every time I wake, my chest feels heavy, as if I’ve lost something I can’t name.
I’ve already enrolled for this school year. My parents think the months I spent recovering were enough. Physically, maybe. Mentally, I’m not so sure.
The clock reads 1:04 a.m. I should sleep, but instead, I’m staring at the ceiling, replaying that dream again.
A girl is on a swing at the playground. The wind lifts her hair, and her smile, it’s almost blinding. I want to go near her. Ask her something. Anything.
“ can I ask you something?”
She turns to look at me, but there’s no recognition in her eyes. She doesn’t answer.
I jolt awake. My heart races.
Was that just a dream or a memory?
I give up on sleeping and start getting ready, even though it’s far too early. When I’m done, I lie down for a short nap before the driver arrives.
The accident.
My parents told me I was in one, but they never gave me the details. They said forgetting things might be a blessing. Maybe they’re right, if I don’t remember, it can’t hurt me.
When I arrive at school, I’m greeted by faces I can’t place. Their smiles feel too wide, too knowing.
“Welcome back, Minji. Sad you’re not in our batch anymore, but I’m glad you’ve recovered. Let’s play basketball later, I know you miss it.”
“Uhm thank you, but I don’t play basketball.”
Her smile falters. “So it’s true? You don’t remember anything.”
“I’m sorry. I have to go” I say quickly, stepping away.
“I’m Yujin” she calls after me. “We’ll be at the court later. Don’t forget.” she added.
By the time I find my new classroom, my energy is already drained.
“Sit here” a girl with sharp cat-like eyes says, gesturing to the seat beside her. She’s quiet, reserved, but not unfriendly.
“Thank you.”
The silence between us feels heavy until she breaks it. “I’m Haerin. I don’t usually start conversations, but you seem quieter than me.”
I smile faintly. “Minji. Sorry, I just have a lot on my mind. Let’s be friends?”
Her lips twitch into a small smile. “Sure.”
Class passes more easily than I expected. Haerin is intelligent, calm, and easy to talk to once she opens up.
Then,
“Kim Minji, someone’s looking for you!” a boy calls from the back.
I glance toward the door and see her.
Sullyoon.
The boys can’t take their eyes off her, and I understand why. She’s effortlessly beautiful. But for me, it’s not just that, it’s the way each step toward her feels like I’ve walked this path before.
“You left this at our house” she says, holding out my wristwatch. “You might need it.”
I vaguely remember taking it off before washing my hands. “Oh, thank you—”
“Let me put it on for you” she interrupts softly, taking my hand.
Her touch is warm. My heart stutters.
She looks like the girl from my dreams.
“Thank you” I say again, but before I can step back, she leans in and presses a quick kiss to my cheek.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED? WHAT WAS THAT FOR?
“You look cute” she says with a playful smile that sends my heart into overdrive.
I swallow hard. “Can I ask you something? Did you play at a park when you were a kid?”
Did I just ask a stupid question? Of course she did.
She tilts her head, thinking. “Yes and I met someone special there once”
“Do you remember her name?” I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
She shakes her head. “No. But she had a scar on her leg. But why did you ask”
“ oh nothing, don't mind it”
My breath catches.
She leaves soon after, telling me to take care. But the rest of the day, I can’t focus. That scar.
The moment I get to our house and not the rest house, I head straight to the bathroom and pull up my pant leg. My hands tremble.
There it is. A lightning-shaped scar.
Was it from the accident or from my childhood?
The maid hesitates before letting me into my room, as if she’s unsure I should be here. But once inside, my eyes land on a neatly arranged desk. A drawer full of notebooks catches my attention.
I pull out a small purple one. "Minji Cutie Diary" is written on the front in messy handwriting. I open it and nearly cringe myself into another dimension.
Inside, there’s a childish poem.
'Her hair was braided,
Soft as a fading cloud.
Her smile made me weak,
And I wanted to see it every day.
If I have someone special,
It’s her, no one else.
We played together every day,
And I wished every day could stay the same.
I like her so much,
More than I can explain.
More than friends, more than anything.
And yes, I’m just a kid,
A kid whose affection became love.'
I laugh under my breath, embarrassed but then I freeze.
Who was I talking about?
I turn the page.
And there it is, her name, written in my uneven, younger handwriting.
Sullyoon.
Everything clicks. The dreams. The strange familiarity. The way my heart reacts to her.
She was my first love.
And maybe she still is?
At the very back of the diary, in bold messy letters, I had written,
"I need to find Sullyoon."
I couldn't help but to smile, that's why she seems special.
I promise to bring my feelings back.
