Third Person POV

A tall girl with no friends wandered into the playground again, her eyes scanning the empty swing sets and rusting monkey bars. She wished silently, desperately that someone would play with her. Her parents were always away, lost in the whirl of business meetings in cities far from her reach.

“Minji, do you want some ice cream?” the maid asked gently, pity evident in her eyes as she watched Minji sitting alone, her gaze cast downward.

Each time the maid tried to cheer her up, she was met with the same cold stare. It no longer surprised her why Minji had no friends.

Then, something caught Minji’s attention. A group of boys was pestering two girls at the swing set. She tensed, preparing to intervene but before she could move, the smaller of the two girls kicked one of the boys squarely, sending the group scattering.

Minji blinked in awe.

The small girl calmly adjusted her braid before turning to comfort the taller girl beside her. Something about her stirred a longing in Minji, how she stood up for her friend, how graceful and kind she seemed. Minji wished she had someone like that in her life. Someone strong, pretty, and good-hearted.

“Hanni, Sullyoon! Let’s go home before it gets dark!” a woman called out, walking toward the girls.

Minji’s eyes followed them as they left. She couldn’t stop wondering which is Sullyoon or which is Hanni? Was Sullyoon the smaller girl who stood up to the boys? Was Hanni the taller one she comforted?

From that day on, Minji made it her routine to visit the playground. Not to play, but to search for her, the girl who captivated her.

The first week was filled with disappointment. No sign of her.

Then one afternoon, she spotted the taller girl from before, alone. Her heart pounded as she considered approaching, maybe asking where the other girl was. But her feet stayed frozen. Shyness consumed her.

Next time, she promised herself. There’s always a next time.

Days passed with the same pattern. Unfamiliar faces, loud laughter from strangers, but never her.

Just as Minji was about to give up, fate smiled on her.

“Do you want to play?” a voice asked.

Minji turned and there she was.

“Y-Yes” she stammered, stunned by the reality that they were finally speaking.

“What’s your name?” Minji asked, heart racing.

“My mom always tells me not to give information to strangers” the girl replied smartly.

Minji’s admiration deepened. She was careful. Wise.

“Alright” Minji smiled. “Then I won’t tell you mine either. That makes it fair.”

And for the first time, she smiled at someone, genuinely.

They began sharing the playground, just the two of them. Hanni was always alone. So was Minji. Together, they filled each other’s silences with laughter, stories, and games.

Minji counted those days as treasures.

One afternoon, she tried again. “So, can I ask your name now?”

The girl paused, then said, “Hanni. Pham Hanni.”

Minji felt her heart melt. 'What a beautiful name' She memorized it instantly and wrote it down that night in her diary.
