Evelyn

Carlos and I stood gazing at everyone for while, not sure quite what to do. Suddenly a shard of ice as sharp as a knife flew towards me. I couldn't move, my feet were frozen to the ground, still weak from my fight with Carlos. Just before it hit me Carlos jumped in front of me, pushing me out of the way and shielding me from the ice. The piece of ice sliced straight into his lungs instead of hitting me, the impact making him jerk, and fall writhing to the ground.

"Carlos!" I screamed, picking myself off the ground and running over to him. A burgundy red stain was already forming on his shirt as blood emerged from the hole in his skin and ran down his chest. I knelt down and placed his head on my lap.

"Why didn't you melt it or something?" I cried, "Why didn't you stop it Carlos?!"

Carlos looked at me and said, "Because this is my punishment for killing our parents. I have now redeemed myself, sister, so I can die happy."

"Don't leave me, Carlos," I said urgently, tears coursing down my cheeks.

Carlos put his big tanned hand over my smaller pale one. "Everything will be alright Evie. I feel at peace with myself now that I have managed to save at least one member of my family. I don't mind dying, knowing that you, my dearest sister, will live."

"Carlos, don't speak like that please," I pleaded, my tears sprinkling my clothing and Carlos's face.

"Evie, look at me," he said, struggling to catch his breath, so I did. "Please don't feel responsible about anything that has occurred this day. I wouldn't want you to experience what I have all these years. Please, promise me."

"I promise," I cried, holding tight to his hand.

Carlos was breathing heavily now, his whole body shaking as he lay across my lap.

"Evie," Carlos said, "I love you, my dearest sister."

"I love you too," I said, and with that Carlos stopped breathing.

"Carlos?" I said urgently, looking down at his quiet, still body, "Carlos!"

My scream ripped through the people fighting in the front yard, causing the combatants to stop and look at me and Carlos on the ground.

"No!" My tears now roared like a waterfall; there was no holding them back.

I held my hands up to the sky, in an attempt to get rid of my grief, and power streamed out of my fingertips. Thunder boomed above my head from the monochrome inky sky, lightning striking a nearby tree. Huge grey raindrops fell from the sky, pelting down on people's heads. A sudden wind whipped through the yard, tossing people around like dolls. I was grabbed from behind by Noah before I could hurt anybody. He held me tight to him, letting me sob on his shoulder and let everything out.
