He picked up the last of his boxes and gave me one last look before leaving. I stood there with my roommate holding back the tears. No one could see me cry. The door shut behind him and he was gone.
"Anna?" My roommate, Natalie, gave me a worried look and reached out to hug me. Instead, I just ran to my room and shut the door.
The minute the door shut, the tears started to fall. They started out slow and bearable. But then they came quicker and heavier, until I couldn't see anything. Then I was sobbing, making this horrible sound and gasping for air.
I slid down my door onto the floor and let the tears fall. This was how it felt. I understood now, why girls became depressed after a break up. Because it felt like your heart was just ripped out of your chest. It felt like you were suddenly alone. Anything good you ever felt with that person turns into pain. The pleasure of their touch, the feeling of their kiss, and the fire you felt inside just at the mere thought of them. It all turns to pain. Undeniable, unbearable and overpowering pain.
At some point, I wasn't sure when, I managed to move from the floor to the bed. The bed still smelt like him. The smell of his cologne, his body wash and just the general smell of him. I stuck my face in his pillow and smelled it. It smelt like home. For a few minutes, I stopped crying. The smell was so powerful it was almost as if he were lying there with me.
I wasn't sure how long I stayed in my room. Natalie knocked at the door all the time but I never answered. She ordered all my favorite foods but I never ate it. All I did was stay in bed wearing one of his old sweatshirts and cry.
Every time I fell asleep, I saw him giving me that one last look. That look that was still so full of love but also filled with hate. We had had our last fight and now he was done. I wished more than anything that I could see him again. But I knew I wouldn't. He wouldn't have it. And I was right.
I never saw James Tyler again.
