I wasn't sure what to think just then. All of the thoughts that had been going through my head were now drawn blank and It took me a second to get myself back together.

"Uh what?" I asked.

"Your working with Javier Riverstone" My teacher said.

I nodded and looked back over at Javier. It could just be the same last name right? There was a chance he wasn't Drew's son. Drew as in who'd killed my mother.

But it was a small town and the likely hood was too great. So Javier must have been Drew's son. Did he even know what his father had done? Probably. Was he a killer too?

We got together with our partners to think up an idea about what to write a poem on. It seemed almost comical to me that I was writing a poem with a possible killer.

Javier came over and sat next to me at my desk.

"Hey" He said.

"Um hi" I said, not really knowing what to say.

"So we should probably think of an idea..."

I didn't say anything and instead looked out the window.

"Uh hello?" He asked. "Are you even listening?"

"What?" I asked.

"I said we should probably come up with an idea"

"Actually I have to go to the bathroom sorry" I said and quickly left. I didn't really care if he thought I was being rude or not. I didn't want to work with a killer.

At lunch Javier had no one to sit with. My friends wanted to invite him over but I told them not to. They did anyways. So he sat next to me and I ignored him again. My friends however had no problem chatting on about how the school was.

Later when I got home from school my brother was sitting at the kitchen table looking through mail.

"Anything new?" I asked.

"A letter for you. I didn't read it" Seth said handing me an envelope. I went upstairs to my room and kicked off my shoes then sat on my bed and opened the letter.

Dear Paris,

your mother Jasmine hasn't returned home and I'm sure you know that by now. You and your brother Seth could have probably managed on your own but I'm afraid that it isn't going to work with Shay. Shay is my boss. She tells me who to kill and how to kill them. And of course when. You should know that you are next on her list and I am instructed to kill you soon. Soon meaning within anywhere from this week to this month.

Drew

I dropped the letter to the ground and started to breath heavily. Fear enclosed around me and for sure now I knew that working with Javier was out of the question. Especially since his father was planning to kill me for no apparent reason.

I told Seth later that night. Seth called the cops and they read over both my mothers and my own letter from Drew. They decided not to do anything until they knew that we weren't lying and that it was for real.

That next day at school when I got to ela class Javier was waiting for me at the desk. I sat and when he said hello I said nothing back.

"Okay what is it?" Javier asked. "Why aren't you talking to me?"

I looked away.

"Seriously?" He asked.

"I'm asking for a new partner" I said getting up and talking to the teacher. She told me that we had no changes and I was stuck with Javier.

Later at lunch I didn't say anything to Javier. Then later that week I contined to ignore him, only in anger and fear of him and my mother's death.

By the end of the week Javier had gotten so annoyed that we weren't talking he literally followed me out to the library during free period.

"Paris" He said.

"I'm trying to finish my social studies" I said.

"Just talk to me" He begged. "We need to work on this project and I can't do it without you"

"Why don't you go away?"

"Because we need to write a poem!" Javier said. "Just give me something to work with here"

I spun around to face him. "Write it yourself" I said.

"Why do you hate me so much?" Javier asked.

"I don't hate you"

"Then why else are you ignoring me?"

"I can't tell you that"

I think he seemed to understand what was going on finally. As if killing my mother was no big deal! And he looked away for a second as if to think about what he was deciding to do about it now.

"Okay" He said finally and got up and left the library.
