That next morning when I got to school Javier greeted me at my locker.
"Hey" He said softly. I turned to face him. "I'm really sorry to hear about your mom"
"How did you know?" I asked.
"My uncle works at the police station. He told me that they found her and when I heard what her last name was, I knew that it had to be your mom"
For a second, I was grateful that he was coming to me like this. And then, I realized that his father killed my mom. So he must have known and then tried to make it seem like nothing was wrong. But everything was wrong. And I was so tired of pretending it wasn't.
"It's your fault" I blurted.
"What?" He asked.
"Your dad killed my mom" I said. "I know he did because I found the letter he wrote to her. And the letter he wrote to me"
"Is that why you ignored me the first week we met?" Javier asked.
"Why else would I?" I asked as I slammed my locker shut. "Now your pretending to feel bad for me to hide the fact that you're going to follow your dad's footsteps and kill me too"
"No" He said following me down the hall as I hurried to my class.
"I'm nothing like my father. That was his mistake, his fault. I would never want to hurt you"
"How do I know that?" I asked.
"Because we've been friends a month and for that time I haven't done anything. Doing something now would be pointless. I'm nothing like my father"
"But you live with him"
"He's all I have left. My mother died and now he's going to die too"
"He's going to die?"
"He's sick, in his mind. He thinks it's like some stupid game and now he's out to kill. It's so stupid but he never wants to kill me. He just thinks of me as a friend I guess. I don't think he even knows I'm his son"
I stopped and stared straight into his eyes. Those eyes could make me dance without actually dancing.
And then I trusted Javier because for whatever reason, It seemed that he was being honest with me.
Later that day the intercom announced a dance being held that friday in the school gym. Tickets were being sold at the front office and there were only three hundred in stock.
I sat with Javier at lunch and he kept asking me if I wanted to go to the dance. Not with him, but just if I wanted to go at all.
"Yeah" I said. "Probably"
That afternoon Javier met up with a friend of his in his algebra class. Her name was Caliegh. He was asking Caliegh for her advice on asking me out to the dance.
"Just ask her" Caliegh said. "It won't hurt you"
"You're only saying that because your trying to finish your test"
"Kind of" Caliegh whispered back. "So shut up"
"No, tell me what I should do"
"Do whatever you think you should do, I dunno" Caleigh said.
"That really helps"
Caleigh got up and moved to a new seat. So much for that. But then later on Javier built up the courage to ask me. It was at the end of the day and he was standing by my locker with me.
"Hey" He said. "I was wondering if you'd like to go with me to the dance"
"Sure" I said. I closed my locker and grabbed my bag. "See you later"
"You too" Javier said as I left school. When I got home my brother was sitting on the couch reading the newspaper. I really don't know why he was reading a newspaper.
"Hey" I said putting my bag on the chair. "I'm home"
"Hi" Seth said as he flipped the page. "How was school?"
"The usual"
"Did you talk to Javier?" Seth asked. He knew that I was friends with Javier and didn't like it. To tell him that I did would have ruined his day.
"No" I lied. "Ignored him"
"Oh, good" Seth said. I went into the kitchen to get a snack and instead found another letter on the table.
Being friends with my son doesn't mean that you get to still live. He can't save you and you can't save yourself either. Which only means that I get my way, as I always do and expect to with you.
I couldn't show it to Seth. Another police investigation and another bunch of lies and tears that I would not go through. I brought the letter upstairs and stuffed it into my dresser drawer.
That next day afterschool Javier was giving me a ride home from school. What I didn't expect was to find his father riding in the front seat.
"I'm sorry" Javier said. "I know it's uncomterble for you. But I promise my father won't hurt you. He's only coming for the ride"
I tried to believe that as I got into the front seat. The guy who killed my mom was sitting behind me. Why wasn't he in jail?! Did being sick in his mind make the fact he killed my mom okay? No, it did not.
Javier dropped me off handing me the ticket.
"Two more days until the dance" He said before he left. "See you in school tommarow"
"Bye" I said walking in.
"Who was that?" Seth asked when I came in. He was watching tv but he muted it. I sat down on the chair across from him. "No one" I said. "I just got a ride home from a friend"
"Not Javier I hope, who I also hope that you're still ignoring" Seth said.
"Yeah, I am" I said. "Oh, I'm uh going out Friday night"
"With who?"
"A few friends from one of my classes. Were going to hang out at thier house and watch a movie"
"Okay" He said. "That's fine"
That night in bed I heard someone opening my door. All of the lights were shut off so it was only a shadow. They came into my room and walked up to my bed.
"Seth?" I said sitting up and switching on the light. Only, it wasn't Seth. And the lights wouldn't work. So whoever it was was in the dark with me.
"I've given you time with my son" Drew said. "Time to fall in love but you haven't fallen in love yet"
"Why would I fall in love with Javier?"
"Because you know that in your heart you want to" Drew said. "Too bad you can't"
"What do you mean I can't? Of course I can, i-if I wanted to"
"I'm not going to let that happen" Drew said and stabbed me in the heart with a knife.
I screamed. Seth ran in and turned on the light.
"What happened?" He asked.
"Another nightmare" I explained. "Sorry"
"Don't be sorry" He said. "I just really wish this whole killer thing would stop"
"So do I" I said as he came over and hugged me.
I tried to get some sleep after that but it didn't do much good.
