She'll come back if it's meant to be, Hannah, you know that.

Hannah spent the night, and that's how I knew I was fucked.

I slept on the couch, because I knew what heartbreak felt like, and sleeping on couches would not make it feel any better. Nothing really would, besides time.

The next morning, I woke up to the smell of coffee and tea: Hannah was up. She was an early riser no matter how late she had been up the night before, so I wasn't really surprised at that; I was more surprised that she remembered where everything was in my kitchen.

I rolled out of bed, not caring all that much of what I looked like, and went to find the tiny blonde, only to find the kitchen empty. I glanced out the window and saw her out on the patio, leaning against the railing and looking out across my small backyard. How did she still manage to make gym shorts and bedhead look good? I joined her outside and gratefully accepted the mug she offered me. "Brewed it the way I remember you used to like."

"Perfect." I allowed a small grin.

The tension was so thick, I felt like I was swimming in it, and struggling to stay afloat. We knew there was stuff to talk about. For example: me talking to her ex-girlfriend before they broke up.

"Do-"

"Ha-"

We started at the same time, and laughed nervously. I gestured for her to go first.

"Do you ever wonder what makes you fall in love with a person?"

"All the time," I mumbled. "Love is a weird concept."

"I'd drink to that," she said, grinning, before downing more of her tea. "What were you saying?"

"It's nothing."

"It's not nothing if you brought it up. I know it's been a while, but at least give me credit for knowing my best friend's habits."

I sighed. "Don't say I didn't warn you."

She nodded.

"Ingrid and I talked," I said bluntly, before seeing her scared look. "Not today or yesterday even, but after we filmed the podcast and sense of self video."

"And what did she say?"

"She said something about-" I had to start over because my mouth was so dry. "She said something about you both being in love with the same straight girl."

And again, all she did was nod.

I sighed and look down into the swirling brown of the coffee mug. I was about to head back inside when I felt a weight on my left side.

The world slowed down.

I turned my head to see Hannah's resting gently on my shoulder. I moved my head towards the top of hers. The world was screaming no no no no no, and everything about this was wrong, she just got dumped last night stop it Grace-

And I placed a soft kiss on the top of her blonde strands.

It felt right. It felt natural, it felt regular, it felt like the intimate moment was perfect for it. But I heard a sharp intake of breath and knew I had crossed a line.
